I really want to be able to play The Long and Winding Road by the Beatles by the end of the weekend. I have found sheet music for it but I can't read music. I'm also having a hard time figuring out the slash chords. Can anyone possibly help me????

Try this link... check out the free piano lessons on it (but be careful when surfing as some of the lessons aren't free). Click the button for the complete package... the guy has a lesson on slash chords in the sub menu. Most of the lessons are pretty basic stuff... but sometimes I find some interesting ideas on some of the lessons.

http://www.pianolessonsunlimited.com/nav...lues/index.html

There are other sites on the net also they may help. Maybe you should try posting to the Beginners Forum as there are plenty of people on it willing to help and be supportive.

Try to find some easy to understand books on music theory so you understand how to read music & how to build chords. There are also DVDs out there. Try the library.

Your school (including Jr. Colleges if you are an adult beginner) should have music theory courses that can help.

Of course you could also find a good piano teacher to help you get a good start; probably the best way to go so that you can at least the basics.

Stick around the PW forum--- this is an awesome place to learn about piano.

I do hope this helps.

Hopefully others can chime in...

Thanks for the links. It finally hit me that the bass notes are the second part of the slash. I do have a rather specific question about the song The Long and Winding road; can u tell me the chords to the part that goes "Many times I've been alone and many times I've cried..."

Let me see what I can find; I have a beatles anthology book that goes back 2 decades by now. And of course I have some few fake books that will give a general idea or a place to start on it.

What key are you playing it in btw? We need to know that.

I'll check my books out... and maybe some others will chime in and tell you how they play it. I put a question mark on this reply so that maybe somebody will see it and give you some nice tips.

My Anthology Book "Beatle Mania 1967-1970" has the song in C#Minor for the piano;
For a guitar it is transposed up 4 frets (2 whole steps) to easier chords (Key of F)

I usually play it the easy way... play the guitar chords without transposing them... which means I play it in C (relative minor is Am)

Confused yet?
SO
If playing in C... to start you out

the chord progression for that section is 7 chords as given in this score I am looking at

C/Gbass F C/Ebass Dm7 G7 C/Gbass F

Over the words: Many-times I've --- is C/G
Over the words: been a-lone and --- is F
Over the words: many times I've --- is C/E
Over the word: cried ---- are Dm7 then (G7)
Over the words: Anyway you'll --- is C/G
Over the words: never know the --- is F
Over the words: many ways I've --- is C/E
Over the word: tried but --- Dm7

still they lead me back to the long and winding road.... (to the ending of the song)
hope this helps you figure it out

BTW what does your sheet music have on it as far as the chord profressions. You picked a tricky one --- but keep at it if you really want to learn it. Maybe find some easier tunes to work on during the times you may feel overwhelmed and frustrated then come back to it later. Good luck.
I'll see if I can find some more links for you.

I pretty much figured it out by ear; with the exception of a few chords here and there. I'm not sure what the actual key I play it in is but it is the exact same as the recorded version. So does anyone know the chords to the part I mentioned in that key?

Got a sound file of you playing it?
Have you posted it over on another board already if so, or post it here?

What is the last chord you play since you said you are playing it by ear? A lot of times songs will end the chord of the key.

Sometimes it can be trickier to figure out though... such as when the song is in a relative minor key.

Or when the song is an exception to the rule of the last chords root letter name being the key.

I wouldn't be surprised if the song played on the piano is recorded originally in the key here.

My Anthology Book "Beatle Mania 1967-1970" has the song in C#Minor for the piano;
For a guitar it is transposed up 4 frets (2 whole steps) to easier chords for the guitar player

I'll see if I can find something to look at.

The last chord seems to be a Eb Maj Triad at the end of the 1st verse... Key of Ebmaj I think or its relative minor on the clip I previously posted?

I hope this helps.

The last chord I play before the part I can't figure out is an Eb.

This is pretty cool..

Just press on the notes on the little key board and it generates chors and pitch sounds.
Then to hear the chord you can brush across your selected notes... oooh la la.

The numbers and letters on your selected keys the name of the pitches.

http://www.gootar.com/piano/

There many other free chord generators out there; some with other instruments also like guitar, uke, mandolin, banjo etc.

I bookmarked this thing myself... you can actually play simple tunes with it... Instructions on what you can do with it are included.

The key that the original song is in is E flat major and that is the key that I play it in.

You may have answered the question already but what are the chords for the section beginning with "may times I've been alone, and many times I've cried..."

You'd have to transpose what I gave you in the earlier post... it was in another key

Here was what I gave earlier... I gave you the guitar chord progressions as it was the easiest key for playing (especially if you want to do it with a guitar player) and then transposing up by moving your fingerings/hands up as many half steps as needed.
