My teacher performed this for me at our last lesson, and I was absolutely boweled over by it. He performed it so beautifully - totally idiomatically, too, even though he does not play any jazz. Here is the link to the score in case anyone is interested: http://www.keithjarrett.org/transcriptions/OverTheRainbow.pdf

Thanks for that. The transcription I posted is actually of a performance on his La Scala CD, and a little different from the performance you posted.

I love to watch his hands and hear his arrangements but prefer not to see his body in the picture...too distracting for me. BTW, Dmitri Shostakovich has a distant cousin who lives in this town. rada www.pianopassions.com

Thank You, very interesting transcription. I seem it is an arrangement of the theme, without the improvisation.
A pianist can learn very much analyzing transcription like this.
For example in this arrangement I like very much the counterpoints that Jarrett plays.
There is a polyphony with four or five parts or voices, not only a simple accompaniment to the melody.
Great!

It's a very emotional arrangement that people really like. My kids get up and dance & sing along. The best thing is it's pretty easy, took me under a week to learn the dots, and a few more to memorise to performance standard. A couple more easy ones I like are Don't Ever Leave Me It's all in the game and (not so easy & longer) Someone to Watch Over Me all available here: http://www.gel.ulaval.ca/~savary/kj/index_en.html

DDS - Thank you so much. I'm in heaven. KJ is one of my favorites. I listened to Jarrett's mp3 and followed the score. I can't wait to start. He makes it sound so easy.

The transcription of “It’s All in the Game” mentioned above by AD is the encore track from “The Out-of-Towners.” This arrangement is a beautiful and new approach to a melody that’s been around since 1911, when future Vice President of the US Charles Dawes composed it. sample: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VAHCW8/ref=dm_mu_dp_trk6?ie=UTF8&qid=1205341415&sr=8-1

Thanks for sharing that, AD. Very nice. I normally just play classical, but I recently started working on learning this arrangement as an independent project. I work on it as a way to "cool down" after my practice session. What makes the piece challenging for me is the voicings. I see measures 49-57 as the emotional climax in the arrangement, and play it that way.

Not at all, recording set up consists of digital Panasonic camcorder on a tripod, preferably with kids out of house. The sound bounces a lot on recordings, I have the front panel off and we have a ceramic tiled floor - makes me sound like I pedal all the time. Actually when I'm learning a piece I do pedal too much - you can also tell I'm learning it as I have the music up. (contrast with St Louis Blues/Maple Leaf Rag & little pedal) Incidentally, I thought the climax of OTRainbow was around bar 43 with the high octaves, after that it's more a pause/restatement and wind down.
Piano is a 3 year old Bluthner B. Lilylady(Roberta) who posts on PW also has one - got it last year I think, to complement her Estonia grand.
Silent Night is a beginner piece arranged by 'Preston Keys' (I recall the notes were posted sometime before Christmas on Pianofacts Beginners Forum - thanks to Gryphon?) but don't remember the original source. There was a second nice Christmassy song posted too...I forget. I'll try to find the link for you.

That was a great KJ performance. It's right up there with another phenomenal performance I witnessed once when Tony Caramia played the accompaniment of it for my wife... his opening was so riveting, she missed the cue to come in for the verse. If only I had gotten a recording of that.

Since we are on a KJ kick here - maybe someone can help me out. I fell across a KJ Youtube link a couple of months ago. I love the tune so much, and his performance of it, that I transcribed the first 5 seconds of the piece and worked it up. I would like to see if there is a transcription of the piece, but, I have no idea of it's name. It is not listed on the link. Very strange. If anyone knows what the tune is called, please let me know. Here is the link: http://www.pcplanets.com/videoyoutube-Keith-b-Jarrett-b-.KiWchoEo2Vw.shtml

knotty - Thank you so much. Now, why didn't I think of reading the comments? Probably because I can't take my eyes off of his performance!

Thanks for posting the PDF and for the MP3 ... it's a classic track and it's always good to try new arrangements. On the videos, both the over the rainbow and rider videos are distracting to watch ... I'm not a fan of the autistic savant pose in the first video or the fidgeting in the second - I just don't think the posturing in either adds anything.

It seems that the pdf for the Over the Rain transcription is no longer available at http://www.keithjarrett.org/transcriptions/OverTheRainbow.pdf Will someone be so kind as to tell me where to find it? Thank you so much. Frank

It's still available via the Way Back Machine (aka, the Internet Archive)... http://www.archive.org/web/web.php Just paste in the complete URL and click, "Take Me Back." The latest touch-date seems to be Jun 11, 2007 and is probably what you want. Howard

COPY AND PASTE the link below into your web browser and then hit Enter: us.share.geocities.com/xoiros1/Rainbow.mp3[/b] DDS24P&FOP87, Maybe I'm doing something wrong but when I use this link, I only get about 43 seconds of the clip. Does sound real nice though.

DDS24P&FOP87, Uh, never mind about the incomplete mp3. I found it on Amazon downloads for $0.89. I sure like this version of one of my favorites.
