hi folks. just wanted to talk about my first drum lesson today. it went really well today. it was an hour lesson and my teacher pretty much threw me right in the fire. since i already knew the basics of rhythm from piano i think it really helped me hit the ground running. well i can't say enough how helpful i think this is going to be for my grasp of rhythm. i was playing a basic rock beat and both feet and both hands were going all doing separate things. pretty cool. now i can't wait to start applying this to piano and comping and independence. i'll keep you all posted as to my progress if anyone is interested...

That's great! Glad you're having fun with it. I was a drummer in a band for a few years, and I still do play for my own enjoyment. And having a background in piano definitely helped.

Is your teacher going to have you learn to read drumset music? Not tab, but actual notes? It's really easy if you know piano music.

Yeah we're going to get into reading drum music next lesson. We'll see how it goes. I have a lot to work on just from the first lesson. But I guess if you don't feel like you're really pushing yourself then you're not really making progress. I'm all about pushing

yeah you're right you have to enjoy it or it's really pointless. i try not to take things overly seriously but at the same time i think you always have to keep in mind what you are trying to accomplish and work towards that goal. now i just have to figure out how i'm going to work in piano lessons and practice with the drum stuff...it will definitely be a challenge but hopefully well worth the effort.

Rob this stuff is a lot harder than I anticipated. But even after one lesson I can see how beneficial this will be. I'm going to be doing an hour lesson every two weeks. Do you think that is sufficient? Also I do not have a drum kit and will not be working with one. Do you have any suggestions on what I should focus on to apply the drum training to piano? I really want to thank you again for the tip.
