I'm reading "Jazz" by Scott Yanow, and I don't have much idea about music theory, but love to listen Jazz. He defines two common qualties in Jazz in the book. The first one is "improvisation". He is saying that the second one is "the feeling of the blues" which does not refer to the technical blues structure, but the idea by bending notes(never done in classics). What is the "bending notes"?

Think about a video, close up on the hands, of Eric Clapton playing a slow blues on the guitar. He frequently plants a digit and pushes the string (n pulls it) on the fret board. He moves the tone a half step by doing that, and slurs it to the next note.

(Pause to consider classical training. "Slur." Represents one note tied to another, sharing time value. No space between.

Ok, on a keyboard, one "slurs" by sliding a finger from the flat preceding a note to the note itself...in a C scale, I am playin the blues with Eric Clapton. I "bend" the E over middle C by putting my 3d finger on the Eb and sliding it up to the E.

Go bend some notes. TGG
