Although I have a full time job, this has always been a dream of mine. These places are AWESOME and full of energy. We had one in Lexington for a short time, maybe 2 years, and we used to go during college maybe twice a month. They actually let me play once but I had to pay $20, was a blast though.

So how difficult is this and what skills do I need? How well do I have to sing also, I'm not good of a singer but maybe with vocal training I could pull it off. My piano skills are good enough but I'd need to memorize quite a few songs.

Also, even with the necessary skills, how difficult is it to land one of these positions?

Thanks!
Jason

I was tempted to post this in its own thread but decided against because
theres a lot of data here that I hope I don't regret writing. \:\)
Great question. i learned about 50 of the "A" tunes they play at those
types of bars. Quality singing an absolute must. I auditioned at a really
high quality one here in Phoenix a few months ago and was told without
hesitation, No thanks. They were nice and all but...

the issues they had with me were:

*quality of singing not ready yet

*which brings me to second issue, they generally play everything in the
ORIGINAL key. i need to take them down anywhere between a half step and
a step and a half so i can SING them, not make a fool of myself. to do
this, i use the tranpose button to the key signature i feel i can pull
off. they said this is an absolute no no, in fact they didn't even know
how to do it on the motif racks they were using. this set me up for failure
as i ended up singing things way out of my range that sounded strained and
bad in general. as you may know, singing is all about tension and when they
told me i couldn't transpose things with the button, all hell broke loose
with my nerves, tension, sweating, singing voice gone to pot, i've never
had the physical sensation of my mouth and throat actually drying up like
sandpaper in spite of the copious amounts of water I was drinking every 30
seconds and the couple bottles i drank that morning. it was pure tension/stress,
never had that before or since. you can imagine singing your favorite songs
at the peak of your range and someone says, oh by the way, you are going
to have to do them a step and a half HIGHER now after you'd practiced them
forever in your comfort range. simply put, it didn't work.
which brings me to my next one.

*they don't allow any books of leadsheets/lyric sheets/laptops or anything
like that on the pianos at this one. by not using the transpose button, in
a sense you have to know roughly 200 songs with lyrics from memory (the
experienced ones know MUCH more than that) in every key. you have to be able
to transpose them on the fly at any time as he said they play things in different
keys all the time depending on the singer, i know i mentioned that they prefer
in original key, but his point was, you need to be able to do them in any key
whether you need to transpose them very often or not. you're gonna say but
those songs are 1 4 5, easy! yes true, but some have solos, intricate intros,
endings, all kinds of other things, anyway, to transpose say bennie and
the jets with its great solo in any key RIGHT NOW in performance, its just
something i can't do and not sure if i will ever get there. I mean i could
learn it in all keys, but to learn everything, every way, i just didn't see it.

*the last reasons that really made me give up entertaining the idea of even
going back to the woodshed and trying all this stuff was, at that club, one needed
to be a proficient bass player and drummer too. can you imagine? it was an eyeopening
day to say the least. wanted to go hide...

on the positive side, these guys (most of them) were GREAT players/singers/entertainers
and the club is a resounding success, now I understand why. I do know though that
they can vary in terms of quality, musicianship etc. Some are more comedy oriented
for example where all that other stuff isn't quite so vital. Then again, this is
probably the best one I've been to so...

Given your trepedation about your singing voice, I suggest teaming up with a female vocalist. Not only will that leave you free to accompany the tunes unfettered without having to concentrate on singing everything, but if she's really good, and looks good, many doors will swing wide open up for you as far as gigs go. Having a female vocalist also gives you the versatility to do male/female vocal duets! Look in your local trade papers or news classifieds. Maybe even Craigslist. There's always songbirds looking for capable accompanists, collaborators, and musical directors!

Holy cow, Ag...

I broke into a cold sweat just reading that!
Pretty much sums up the reason I even get uneasy playing in front of the family at Christmas!!!

I live in Phoenix also, and don't know which club you're referencing (relatively new parenthood will do that to you, I guess)...but now I'm curious.

All I can say is congrats for giving it a shot...and not expressing bitterness over the rejection.

Sounds like you're a heck of a player, nonetheless!

Hello NmbrNine- fellow Phoenician. It was the Big Bang in Tempe. Yeah, it was a rough day and a good slap in the face by reality. I know lots of songs but would not say I am a very good player. I am a passionate player, technically good? Nahh. \:\) But that has never stopped me. \:\) I feel great for having tried and learned alot, particularly how much I still have to learn. Not sure if I will ever get there but I do have my toe in the water. \:\)

Oh, understood about new parenthood too, definitley shuts ya down for a bit. \:\) I've got my son singing along with me now (6 yrs old) so its the best of both worlds. Lots of fun. \:\)

Thanks for being honest and that was a great post. My children are grown up now and out of the house but they are taking the ability to make music and to enjoy the different styles with them. When I was just starting my family I to thought there will not be time for family and music but there was and because I kept plugging away I now play more than ever and I enjoy it more because my family supports and enjoys the music. Phoenix is growing up fast and there are a lot of venues out there for us to play at. My advice is to find a spot where you can play your piano at least once a week at for a while to work out performance issues and learn what people want to hear. Maybe one of the coffee houses or restaurants for just two hours like happy hour or during dinner hour from 6 to 8 and suggest a little lower pay till it takes off and leave a tip jar out. Something about playing once a week in front of people keeps things fresh and moving forward. I will be having a jazz concert on December 30th and you are welcome to come by say hi and sit in if you want.

If you have the sound that works (voice and playing talent) AND charisma, then the next biggest factor is MEMORIZATION. You absolutely must have a nice fat repertoire in your head, ready to pull out the right tune at the right time.

If you're that far along, then timing and jokes, along with your personality will carry the day.

If you have what it takes, you'll do well.

P.S. I never had what it takes for this, however I found much employment in my youth as a side man - piano/keyboards and some vocals.

agree with Randy, if you have:

great voice

tremendous piano chops

charisma

100's of songs ready at performance level MEMORIZED

can transpose them without thinking about it on the fly

know WHEN to play each one and what the crowd wants to hear without being asked

comic timing with lots of good bits and stories

also, if all of the above are to pro level, you might learn bass, drums and guitar for above mentioned items as well.

if you have all of that, it should be a piece of cake. \:\)

ps, thank you DPVJAZZ, I want to go to your restaurant someday if only just to have dinner with my family.

If you have all that, you deserve to be famous!

Of course, the reality is that even the most incredibly talented musicians never get the national spotlight.

But, seriously, you don't need to learn the other instruments if you can play the piano and sing like Billy Joel or Harry Connick Jr, or Diana Krull, etc.
