Any fans of Norah Jones? I read somewhere she majored in Jazz piano and was "found" while doing some gigs in New York. Does anyone know more about her?

She's Ravi Shankar's daughter, so she definitely has musical genes. I think she went to college and majored in music... and for some reason, I want to say it was someplace completely unexpected, like Kansas or something.

Off to Google...

OK, she went to Univ of North Texas in their jazz program, so not as unexpected as I expected! smile

Yeah - love her stuff (and her 2hearts )

You can't beat putting on a Norah Jones CD and going for a long, calm drive. Or chilling in the evening with a glass of wine and her music.

Where have I heard Norah Jones before? I get this uncanny feeling of Deja Vu listening to her. Her style, her melodies, her vocal inflections, the overall sound of her production. Let me think. Oh yeah! I've got it:

Is Norah her clone? Or is Norah just unreleased Rickie Lee out-takes eek

That's the key to her success, imo.

I find her music to be monotone and boring at times...like elevator music....far from the jazz she studied in school...

then again I'm also the same guy who thinks U2 sucks, when everyone seems to love them...so go figure.

Old U2 (1980-90) - good, if not awesome
New U2 (1990-2006) - what happened?!

Hi,
A lot of good points made by you all-but no one seemed to address the record company side of Norah Jones. I remember when her first album came out and I was thinking "wow, that is some really pleasant country rock music." I was surprised to find out that she was on Blue Note Records out of New York as I had always loved the serious jazz records on the Blue Note label. Then I found out people were calling Norah Jones music jazz. Ug. As much of a disappointment as seeing young musicians thinking Kenny G recordings are representative of jazz saxophone. Ug again.
Typically, it is easy for folks to not think of the record company side of things, which is that record companies exist to do one thing-sell records. A tried and true industry trick for labels has been to release one album such as Norah and hope that it generates sales of the catalog owned by the label. Sometimes this works, other times it does not.

Nora is a clone. They all sound like this now, kind of breathy and randy.

It's pleasant music, better than most of the pop rot, but is it jazz? Who knows, but it ain't Ella or Sarah or Lady Day. So many better jazz singers these days.

Diane Krall is a lot more talented than you'd imagine from her recordings. She's an excellent jazz pianist and is very creative in a live set. Yes, this is jazz, but I don't feel her recordings are.

JMHO.
