I'm interested to hear some replies on voicings for pop music. Are you pretty much okay with any type of voicing in pop music or do you stick to certain ones? If you use certain voicings which ones, etc...

(I know I'm being rather broad here...)

The main element of popular music is the melodic line so your main consideration in voicing chords should be that your voice leading within those chords compliments the melody contrapuntally, as well as harmonically. For instance, a melodic line that incorporates centering on an A note over an F chord would in most cases (and of course WHAT the next and previous chords in the progression may be) best be bolstered harmonically with an F chord voiced with a C or an F at the root. The melody itself should dictate choice of the best corresponding gravitational root positions within the chord structure.

Diatonic 5ths, 6ths, and octaves starting on the root or 3rd. root and fifth provides chord center; 3rd provides harmony

check out the pop piano book by Mark Harrison - great stuff in there about chord voicings for several pop styles - excellent resource highly recommended. Covers triads, triads over differnt roots, sevenths, sevenths over different roots, quartal voicings, movement within voicings of 9 to 1 and 4 to 3....lots of examples too.

It depends on the song, the tempo, what the other instruments around you are playing, and the emotion you're personally trying to create.
