He is an entertainer and a good one. But not, I submit, one of the guitar greats. Any decent player can copy any of his sings or riffs easily and by ear. Very formulaic.
A probably one of the world's great pop guitarists-he has a great sound and always puts together great bands- always has excellent muso's IMO

Any decent guitarist might well be able to COPY his riffs, but HE came up with those riffs, which is his true talent. His command of MELODY is unrivaled in popular music!!!

Led Zeppelin.....
Pink Floyd is great too, but Zep can do so many diffrent styles, and Page is just so great on the different stuff...

CC2,
Nice lists - almost exactly mirroring my teen listening. Still some of my favorites, too. Wakeman was my first keyboard hero (along with Emerson), and is still a favorite, but in terms of musicianship, Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, and a few others probably should appear above him on your rock/jazz list. JMO, of course.

Sir Lurks, Yeah, I tried to mix it up a little to include the jazz fusion guys with the progressive rock people. Not really fair, but a helluva lineup, wouldn't you say???

I like to think that they both have their equals to being the best quality, wide variety or range of style in music, lyrics so unique, and concerts unforgettable.. Because my husbands favorite is Led Zeppelin and well, Pink Floyd will always be my number ONE favorite I believe I get the most from the best of both... Probably the reason my relationship with my hubby survives... (just kidding I mean the relationship is very good as its so rich with good music taste...) Pink Floyd Led Zeppelin
Peace!

Bruford is great, just not as great as the three I listed, in my opinion. These guys are the creme de la creme. When it comes to drumming, Jazz fusion drummers are in a class by themselves. The syncopation and other demands of this music transcend both traditional jazz and rock. What makes them so great is that they've fused the two genre's into a whole new way of drumming, where the drummer now becomes one of the lead players....and NOT just in his solos. If you have your doubts, get yourself some Dave Weckl albums and give a listen. There is NO one around, living OR dead that can do what this guy can on drums. He is inhuman.

This summer my son attended a rock n' roll day camp, where kids get together to write and perform their own songs. In a tribute to Pink Floyd, one of the bands called themselves "Fuchsia Steve."

For me Pink Floyd. I can name my favorite LZ tunes on one hand. My fav PF tunes are countless. In fact I was just listening to Gilmore today and he just has a sweet touch. And for a foursome they really found that magic combination.

wonder how many of us are drummers who play piano.... or vice versa. seems to happen a lot.
I'd agree that weckel is probably the best technician, but his style is so canned and lifeless... compare him to someone like steve gadd who doesnt even need chops to impress. (but he does have chops)
steve smith... probably one of the most overlooked and talented modern drummers.
And im sorry but neal peart is only good at his own thing... see him try to play anything else and he sux
one of my favs is peter erskine

Funny, but neither of these bands evoke feelings or thoughts of pianos, for me. Synths maybe in the former, an occasional Hammond C-3 in the latter. But in general, when I think of Floyd or Zep, I think of guitar masters, not pianists.
Now, with ELP, Yes group, or any of a half-dozen Steve Winwood projects, there we're talking keyboard wizardry and talent.
But the best all-around rock pianist I've ever seen and heard is Leon Russell. He's a great musician in and out of the studio. I wonder if he still tours?
