Who our here is a Ben Folds fan? I just got his new cd today and it is awesome. I think he is one of the best rock piano players of all time. What other rock piano players do peopel in this forum like besides Folds, Elton John, and Billy Joel?

Ben Folds Five was my favourite band. I loved Ben and his music, but I haven't heard much of his recent stuff. I bought "Rockin' the Suburbs" and liked it, but sort of lost interest in him after that.

Jamie Cullum -- more jazz based than rock
Gavin DeGraw -- more pop based than rock

Nonetheless both have highly listenable qualities by my ears.

"Ben Folds Live" is one of the best live solo albums I have ever heard. I just bought the new CD and listened to it twice in a row driving to the Poconos this weekend.... it is very good.

BTW, Strummer, have you ever heard Jools Holland's rendition of (Swannee) River Boogie? It is wild.

I've been a fan of Ben Folds fan for quite some time. There really aren't too many "piano-playing" musicians that dazzle me... except for Tori Amos and maybe Chantal Kreviazuk, who is really quite amazing live.

Tori Amos stands head and shoulders above the rest, IMHO...[she plays on Bosendorfers which doesn't hurt either]

Whatever happened to Chantal?" You dont hear much about her anymore. That song "Weight of the World" was real sweet.

Her second child is almost due... I know, I was shocked to discover this myself. She did write 6 songs for Avril Lavigne's second album. That's the last bit o' news I've heard though.

Ben Folds is the reason I decided as an adult to learn piano (I'm 31.)

I've loved his music since Whatever and Ever Amen, when he was with Ben Folds Five.

My goal as a pianist is to be able to play the majority of his catalog well enough to form a cover band.

I've heard some people say that they don't like his latest CD, Songs for Silverman, but I think it's great. Specifically, I like Landed, Sentimental Guy, and Trusted, which has some great runs in it.

I've been lurking for a while, but it took this post to make me register.

One of the best DVD's I've ever bought is Ben Folds Five - The Complete Sessions at West 54th. It's from the Fall of '98, a live set from Whatever and Ever.

It's a small audience (I'd have killed to have been there) and Ben, Darren, and Robert tear it up.

It's a great way to see some of his technique that you can't get close enough to see at a concert. He seriously bangs and abuses his piano. I feel sorry for his tech/tuner, but it surely makes for some good showmanship. One of things I've always been fascinated by is how full the music sounds, with just a piano, bass guitar, and drums. Also, if you get a chance to see it, look for Ben's use of a tiny mouth-blown piano-keyed instrument of some sort on Steven's Last Night in Town and Smoke.

If you are interested, Amazon has it. Here's the link . (I'm not an affiliate or anything, it's just the easiest place to which to link.)

If you are a fan, you really should see this.

I've often wondered what kind of piano he uses (& abuses!)
I suppose I could find it in liner notes, but I've never looked.
The tone and voicing seems oddly unique to his own style...sort of like Elton John or Bruce Hornsby...who use Yamaha and Baldwin respectively.
Just curious.

He plays a Baldwin SF-10 as his primary instrument. I'd read somwhere that Baldwin was making some pianos just for him, but I don't know the details of that. I would surely buy one if they marketed them to the public.

Some of the tones you might hear that sound out of the ordinary come from an old baby-grand that he had tacked. A small tack in each hammer makes the sound more precussive. Off the top of my head, Mess off Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner has the tack piano in it.

I've also seen some kind of large upright in the DVD footage from the making of Songs for Silverman. Not sure on the lineage on that one.

Interesting. Thanks for the info.
I've had a good time picking up some of his licks and fills. They are generally good teaching tools/theory for anyone looking to expand and improve their technique.

Hey, thanks! That was a neat article.

NmbrNine, I just ordered a new song book that is supposed to break-down his technique and style. It will be interesting to see how good it is. I have the Whatever and Ever Amen book, and those transcriptions are dead on.

If you are interested, the new one is at http://www.jsrdirect.com/bands/bff/stuff.html

Scroll all the way down, second from the bottom.

Ben Folds fan, here!
(I thought this forum was only for Jazz players- glad I popped in!)

I am a huge Harry Connick, Jr. Fan- Seriously, he can rock it out. Everyone thinks he is just some standard singer- far from it.

Jamie... I met Harrick Connick once. He stopped into a restaurant/bar called Elaines in NYC one night I was there. He sat down and played a few duets with the house piano player. Then played solo. Started with Avalon, then caledonia, then all this boogie woogie new orleans rocking stuff. He must have played a full hour and he DID rock out. It was such a great night, it was not even that crowded and he was so gracious to everyone. A real nice guy.

NO WAY!!!
I heard in concert (which I WILL end up going to in my lifetime, at least once..) he plays many instruments- just such a true musician. I respect him on so many levels. I am a long-time listener of his, and I have to say: He knows all 88 keys of the piano pretty damn intimately. The CD "SHE" was the first that really impressed me as far as the non-standards stuff goes- but then "30" proved some vurtuostic abilities. (not EVEN to mention "Songs I Heard"- Willy Wonka, Annie, Sound of Music, Mary Poppins- you wanna hear SUPERCALAFRAGELISTICEXPIADLIDOSIOUS? It's like no one ever tried!)( don't comment on the spelling...)) I obviously have the utmost respect for the man.
I only wish I could play like him!
