I'd like to learn - and memorise - one or two New Age pieces (I think[/b] I understand what 'New Age' means!) to play alongside my fledgling classical 'repertoire'. I've attempted 'Angel Eyes' by Jim Brickman, but found it frustratingly 'fiddly' to memorise and I really do want to memorise most of what I learn.

Does anyone have some suggestions please?

Hi Cruiser,

I recommend highly the works of David Nevue (www.davidnevue.com) and Ludovico Einaudi.

If you go to the Einaudi mega-thread in AB forum, you'll see lots of discussion about his pieces, the best sheet music collection to buy, and recordings of a dozen or so different Einaudi pieces. I recommend highly his "I due fuimi" as a very easy but quite beautiful piece; here's my recording of it.

David Nevue is another AB forum favorite, and if you search for his name you'll find lots of recordings. You can also look at his website to hear pieces and view sample pages of the music.

Some pieces that are even prettier but a little more challenging include "The Vigil" and "Overcome" (one of my all time favorite new age pieces, and very patterned so easy to memorize).

Well, that's a start. I agree with you about Jim Brickman, by the way... he uses a lot of tricky rhythms and I have always had a devil of a time learning anything by him, which frustrates me to no end because "Lake Erie Rainfall" is absolutely beautiful.

I recently bought Song at the Speyer Cathedral (it's only 2 pages, so great for memorization!). Kinda funny, after having spent so much time learning Solitude, when I started looking for another piece to start working on I looked at quite a few composers and styles of music. I searched, printed, dabbled here and there and just couldn't find anything that drove me to really want to learn it (with the exception of the small Tiersen pice I'm also working on.) How do you define New Age style of composition in theory? My piano teacher told me it is classical style but without the strict structure of classical composition. Input please? From what I've heard, I would say New Age music emphasizes more evident, immediate pleasure in sound over other aspects. The New Age music I've heard also uses more traditional/common chords and progressions, which is quite different from where 20th century compositions (Stravinsky, Debussy) were heading. Perhaps repetition might also be a factor, like in minimalism. I think "I Due Fiumi" shows this well. I think I t fits more in a category with popular music rather than in the categories like 20th century, impressionist, etc.

I haven't really heard enough to characterize it, and I may have just said something dumb.

Monica - Thanks for posting the music.. I enjoyed that, and I always like to hear the people on this site playing. Also I now know how to describe the genre of some of my own pieces.. which are rather different to my usual posts on YouTube.. but rather similar in feel and style to this piece.. thanks!

I'm not sure what "New Age" means, but there is a beautiful piano piece called "First Light," from the album entitled The Plateaux of Mirror by Brian Eno and Harold Budd:

There is also a very touching piano piece (with other instruments) entitled "Too Wounded" from Ray Lynch's The Sky of Mind album. It is slow and improvisatory in feel and very, very beautiful. The sheet music is published but you can probably pick out the notes by ear.
