Does anybody here like Pink Floyd? If so what's your favorite song?

I do...though it would be hard to pick a favorite song. "Comfortably Numb" might be it for me. But I also love "Wish you were here," "Time," and "Dogs."

"Dogs" was my introduction to Pink Floyd, btw. There was a sitcom in the 70s about a radio station in Cincinnati (what WAS the name of that show?), and in one episode the DJ was playing "Dogs" in the background, and it so captivated me I went out and bought the album (vinyl; this was in the dark ages before CDs ). I had been in the midst of a a huge Beatles obsession at the time, and my mom complained bitterly of my constant playing of Beatles albums. But after I switched to Pink Floyd, she asked me to start playing the Beatles again. :p

Lol my favorites are Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Run Like heck, Waiting for the Worms, Money, Time, We Wish you were here, In The Flesh, and Comfortably Numb

I love all Pink!! Saw them in Legion Field years ago!! Sheep, Pigs on the Wing...big Animals fan. Crazy Diamond's great, too.

Floyd is awesome - so many great albums. Right now I'm big on The Final Cut and The Division Bell, but Animals, Wish You Were Here, A Momentary Lapse of Reason - all incredible albums. And of course, the perennial favorites Dark Side and the Wall.

While it's a bit different, their early stuff is good too - I was listening to Ummagumma the other day - good stuff.

I only have a couple of their albums, but planning on getting more.

Favourite songs are Comfortably Numb, High Hopes, and I just love a song called The Fletcher Memorial Home.

Everything off the Dark Side of the Moon album.

After that, just Comfortably Numb, especially the guitar solos (particularly the second of the two). I've not heard a better solo by anyone, although Ritchie Blackmore did a stunning piece in Fools, on DP's Fireball album.

That's getting a bit off topic. The rest of Floyd's work didn't move me at all.

I agree with you...that's the best guitar solo I've heard in any rock song. My vote for number 2 would be at the end of Blue Oyster Cult's live version of Astronomie.

Fletcher Memorial Home is a great song - very emotional, but then so is the whole album (The Final Cut).

Do I like Floyd, hmm by choice I absolutely have to hear them atleast weekly...
Cant answer the question to what is my favorite song but I can say the album I listen to mostly is Wish You Where Here. The Wall, The Dark Side of the Moon, Atom Heart Mother, Echos, Meddal, Obscurred by Clouds are the ones I have heard the most of since I was in diapers, in the crib. 1970's those where the days....
The rest of their albums I have either heard them somewhere else or still looking to add to my collections...
Shine on Your Crazy Diamond and Wish You Where Here are very nice easy pieces to learn for beginner piano..Sounds good too, even on a old out of tune piano, to me anyways...

Man I didnt realize how many songs I have heard in my life but never really put them together with the band. What a incredible Piano player, not sure if it was Steve Howe or Rick Wakeman anyways who ever it was, they where surrounded by keyboards and then a nice grand too..

That was Rick Wakeman. Steve Howe is the guitarist. Wakeman and Keith Emerson were my heros as a teen in the 70's.

Back to Floyd...as a college student train-hopping through Europe, I gazed out the compartment window early one morning, about to pull-in to Victoria Station. There before me was the real-life image from the cover of Animals - the huge Battersea Power Station.


I still have my Kodak snapshot tucked into the album jacket. It was a cloudy day so it's a pretty close copy - except for the pig.

Yes sounds just as good today as they did decades ago. Steve Howe is the quintessential classical "rock" guitarist. His playing on the "Relayer" album set a standard of excellence that I have as yet not heard equaled by guitarists in the fusion/rock/classical-rock genre. :

On this album, Patrick Moraz, a European film-score composer, and far superior musician/keyboardist than Wakeman, teamed perfectly with Squire and Howe to create an amazing sonic landscape!

I've seen both Wakeman and Moraz live, and always thought of Wakeman as a more classical-oriented "performer," and Moraz more of a studio guy. I do feel lucky to own the out-of-print album "Patrick Moraz III," which is pretty interesting.

Wakeman rocks. Howe rocks. Yes rocks. South Side of the Sky? Yours is No Disgrace live, holy smokes, Howe can play.

Who brought up Patric Moraz? I have an old solo album of his called, actually I don't think it had a name, just a symbol, like a golf tee with a ball floating above it, The Power of I??? Gotta pull that out.

Floyd, Its all great stuff, particularly Animals. But my favorite is Great Gig in the Sky from Dark Side. Pure Genius.

Could any other band change the time signature in the middle of the song AND pull it off successfully?

David was having problems in (I think)3/5, so they changed it to 4/4 just as he went into his solo. Masterfull!

Great Gig in the Sky...Simple piano to tear your heart out...Vocals weren't bad either.

Radiohead has pulled off some strange meters ("You" and "Everything in its right place" for example, they are in 11 and 5, respectively.) Primus has also done some work in odd meters.

Money is in 7/4 time and the middle section is in 4/4. Not that difficult a transition - the beat stays the same, there's just 4 beats to a measure instead of 7. I agree, though - they pull it off really nicely

Especially the older stuff. Hadn't listened to them in years.
I didn't know they had released a new CD in March. I sampled it from their website. Except for a few songs its a little too far out there for my taste. Same ELO sound though.

Hey that's right. Money IS in 7/4. The only other 7/4 song I can usually come up with is the theme song from the old Room 222 TV show.

In true Pink fashion, it's an illusion. The whole song is 4/4. They DO want you to think, though...

it actually starts off in 9/16 and the solo starts in 5/4 which is similar to the chorus of Smoke on the Water

To the casual observer, the very fact that you are whistling at work, rather than grinding your teeth & snarling, would suggest that you are exactly where you should be!

According to the band members, the recording engineer (Alan Parsons), and the editor of The Rolling Stone (David Frickie),
The song started out in 7/8 and switched to 4/4 at the beginning of David's solo.
(I got the DVD about the making of DSOM)

Apparently he left the band after the first few years due to mental health/drug issues, and the album "Wish You Were Here" was written in his honor.

Hey thanks for that wav file Sir Lurksalot! What a blast from the past. I was very young, but I remember seeing parts of that Rm222 show. So I was wondering if I'd remember the theme song when I heard it. Oh yeah...even after what, 30 years? Where did you find that? BTW, that is a heckuva good theme song, like so many shows used to have (in the 70's mostly). Even the cheesey show Barnaby Jones had a pretty catchy theme song (which I can hardly EVER remember). Sanford and Son...I could go on and on. Wait, what forum is this again?

for me it has to be comfortably numb It was the 1st floyd tune I heard. I have just got the anthology album sheet music and I am working my way through it. Its not too hard to play but some of the fingering can be interesting.

'Echoes' from the Meddle album - seminal 1/2 hour progrock song that actually predates Yes' 'Close to the Edge' (the gold standard for 1/2 hour progrock epics IMHO). Shine on......

Went sailing alone the other day and put on my i-pod. I played Piper at the Gates of Dawn. The fog was rolling in and the islands seemed to be floating. I swear I was having flash backs
The old Floyd was always my favorite. Dark Side of the Moon was the last album I bought and had them all up to then. The gaint walls and flying pigs just didn't do it for me.

I still have all of my old Emerson Lake and Palmer albums. Keith Emerson was always a hero. He had some serious hand problems many years back and I'm not sure he plays any more. I still remember seeing him in concert standing behind that wall of moogs and wires.

I just saw a recent performance of PF's. A "Dark Side of the Moon" concert. Great stuff. I was always a big Yes fan (not so much for Wakeman though, who I felt was musically sub-par to Howe and Squire), and a fan of ELP. If you're a keyboardist, how can you NOT love Emerson.

A very underrated rock keyboardist was Goldy McJohn of Steppenwolf. The writers would always describe his playing as a "choppy, Kangaroo-like style", in other words.... FUNK! He was way ahead of his time, playing a propulsive, funky style in rock, almost a full 10 years nefore the heyday of Tower of Power, Brothers Johnson, Parliament, etc. instead of what I call the usual "drone" rock organ, washing out the propulsion of the rhythm section as standard practice of 60's rock bands.

Not much is said about this super-group with incredible writing chops but Gentle Giant was as good a group of virtuosic musicians as any whoever played rock, jazz-rock, or classical rock. If you like tightly woven, polymetrically syncopated counterpoint with Stravinskian vocal harmonies this superband is for you:

That's funny you mention Gentle Giant...you took the words right out of my mouth. They were all classically trained and awesome in concert!

I think in "Comfortably Numb," Gilmour actually played more than one guitar solo, and then spliced together the parts he liked!

1967-1977 Genesis is absolutely incredible music. My all time favorite. Supper's Ready is a masterpiece of 24 minutes in length.

All the bands you mention here I know every single piece they played.

I was just watching the 35th Anniversary Yes DVD earlier this evening.

Also watching a bunch of King Crimson videos over at YouTube.

Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Zappa, Marillion, Jethro Tull, Mike Oldfield, Kansas, etc. The list is not too long but man what music!

That's when rock music was real music.

I'm also a big Pink Floyd fan. Check out the Umagumma version of 'Careful with that axe, Eugene'. Never before has a Farfisa organ sounded so creepy! And Roger's inward scream will make your blood curdle and your skin go prickley pear.
Echoes (Pompeii version) rocks as well. I like the Syd Barrett era Floyd as well.

Some peope say there have been no geniuses in the genre of popular music, but Pink Floyd are it. They're up there with the great classical composers in my opinion. And I'm quite serious.

Emo has always been a favorite of mine. And yeah, he is playing now- touring with his own band, actually. And has a bunch of solo cds out. The Christmas Album is really nice. Keith Emerson
