Can anyone recommend me any beautiful, melancholic piano pieces that involves regret, breaking up and the likes? I only know a few (Deborah's Theme - Maksim is one, try listenting to it, it's really really beautiful)

Virtuosic1,

Okay . . . that was truly funny!

After I stop laughing, I'll post something, maybe . . .

"Without You"--a big hit for Harry Nilsson in 1971.

Written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of the well-known 70's band Badfinger. Both Ham and Evans committed suicide by hanging, about 8 1/2 years apart.

On a less depressing note, a friend of mine once owned a dog that would howl in a forlorn manner every time it heard "Without You".

It appears the song had a significant emotional impact on man and beast alike. smile

The old standard "Born to Lose", which has been covered by many artists--including Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Elton John etc.

"For the Good Times", made popular by Ray Price and written by Kris Kristofferson.

Oh, life is a glorious cycle of song,
A medley of extemporanea;
And love is a thing that can never go wrong,
And I am Marie of Romania.

Easy Living; Billie Holiday

Excerpt:
Living for you, is easy living;
It's easy to live, when you're in love
And I'm so in love; there's nothing in life but you

Excerpt:
For you, maybe I'm a fool but its fun
People say you rule me with one
Wave of your hand
Darlin' it's grand,
They Just don't understand...

The instruments sound detuned though on this clip. But the crowd was probably so loud it didn't matter. Don't cha just love the idea of throngs of fans making enough noise that you can't even hear yourself. LOL

In your initial post, you stated that you were looking for music that "involves regret, breaking up and the likes". Yet the piece you linked to has no lyrics.

There is a considerable body of melancholic music in various genres worldwide. However, I don't know how it could specifically involve "regret, breaking up and the likes", if there are no lyrics.

Melancholic pieces with no lyrics can be interpreted by different people in different ways. You may associate a particular lyricless song with breaking up with a lover, whereas another person might associate it with the death of a loved one.
Only through the addition of lyrics, can a song invoke specific feelings of "breaking up" etc.

The saddest, but truest, lines every sung...

I can't make you love me if you don't.

Some excellent melancholic songs that are well-suited for piano, but not necessarily having anything to do with "breaking up", would be:

Speak Softly Love (Theme from The Godfather)
Where Do I Begin? (Theme from Love Story)
A Time For Us (Theme from Romeo & Juliet)
The Summer Knows (Theme from Summer of '42)

Schindler's List... but it isn't about breaking up from a love relationship. It is about Schindler, the man who saved thousands of Jewish lives, from certain death in the Nazi Death Camps.

But that violin playing by Izach Perlmen (I am not sure I spelled his name right) is deep with emotion. I'll fetch it.

The tune on this 911 Tribute Video is Schindler's List Theme Song.

I wanted to find a performance video of Itzhak Perlman playing it but no luck yet.

Found this next to the one I just posted...
911 tribute video to tune of Ashokan Farewell. This tune was theme song for The Civil War Series (Ken Burns?) on PBS

Something about the violin's character that can make it sound so sad, a violin played well is like a nice singers voice.

Itzhak Perlman is the violinist who solos on Schindler's List. (I never would have spelled his name right without help of the internet).

Here is his Bio.

Not sure I understand your question danieldg. Are you wanting pieces you can play on the piano, or just listen to?

My favorites are,

1) Missing You - John Waite
2) You Don't Know Me - Ray Charles
3) Without You - Harry Nilsson
4) I'll Drown in My Tears - Ray Charles
5) Bouncin' Back - Robert Cray

Just a few of many great song!
