When I am composing a piece, I go to my computer and play it on my yamaha keyboard that is hooked up to my computer. I have realized this is probably not the program for me...but I use cakewalk. So here is my question 4 U:

Do U record using a keyboard hooked ut to a computer? If U do, what program do U use....and what program do U most recommend?

Unfortunately, I don't have any way to record right now. I have an old keyboard that I think has the capability to hook up to the computer. I may look into hooking a microphone up to the computer to record off of my acoustic piano. I would like a better keyboard but that will be a long way off due to cost. I'm planning on looking into it all. You're further along than I so I'll be interested in what others have to say.

I have a Technics digital piano hooked up to my computer for composing and sequencing midi files. I use a MidiMan* midi interface , and it works well. I also use Cakewalk Sonar Home Studio, but why you do not think Cakewalk is the right program for you?

* Midiman is now M-Audio

well naking, I think cakewalk isn't the right program for me because when I record, the program uses its own piano sound rather than my piano sound, which is not a satisfying real sound. So when ive tried putting the songs on cd, it just dosent sound good.......It does not sound like a piano at all, and it sounds as if there's no pedal. I just want a program that can professionaly transfer my compositions onto cd just the way I play it and just the way it sounds on my piano. Maybe im just not doing something right with the program, and if Im not, please let me know, cause im very frustrated with it.....and i havta have my compositions put on cd soon cause that just part of my senior project due in March 2006.
ANY HELP IS APPRICIATED......THANX

If you don't like the piano sound out of the box you can try other piano samples or patches to get almost any sound you want.

The pedant in me is screaming about the usage of the letter "U" in place of the correct "you" but I'll silence it and answer the question.

Yes, I do, using an M-Audio Prostation 88, Edirol UA-25 and an iBook 1.33 gHz

Hi DCshoesGirl,

You do realize you can use Cakewalk to record the midi of your performance, then edit it and then play it back to your piano and record the audio from your piano. What's required is an understanding that you don't want to use a virtual synthesizer in Cakewalk you just want to record your midi and play the midi data back to your piano so it will respond and produce audio through its audio output that can then be recorded as audio in Cakewalk. If that's what you're doing then one reason it sounds different from your piano is that you're playing it back through different speakers (connected to the audio output of your computer). The samples in yoru piano were intended to be played through its internal speakers not something external of higher (or lower) quality. Please tell us more about your exact setup including what speakers you have connected to your computer? What audio and /or midi interface do you have? We know you have a Dell computer and Cakewalk. What Yamaha keyboard do you use?

Now to answer your questions, I have a Athlon 64 PC with Windows XP using Logic 5.51. I also have another computer using Gigastudio 3 connected to the first by midioverlan+. I also have a midisport 8x8, a Tascam 20 channel mixing board (an old M320) and a few microphones.

I will tell you that once you have figured out how to produce audio in your computer you should love it. I've been checking out free plugins and found an awesome free VST reverb. I believe they can be used within Sonar with the VST wrapper. Check out Glaceverb at this link, it's awesome (it's even good on vocals).

Cheers,

Well steve Chandler, I hafta say I dont really know much about computers and stuff, so I cant exactly answer all your questions, but what you are saying makes total sense to me and thats what I want to do, but I just have 2 little speakers that came with the computer and I have a YDP-223 Digital piano.

Sounds like you probably need to get more familiar with configuring Cakewalk. I say that because from what you describe, it sounds like it's recording midi output from your keyboard but not playing your keyboard when you play back the midi you've recorded. What you want is for the Cakewalk program to send its output via midi back to your keyboard. Then you can record the keyboard's audio output for your CDs if that's the sound you like... after you edit your midi performance (if needed) to make it perfect.

Are you using midi cables? If so you'd need 2 of them, one for input and the other for output. If using USB, the midi ports may be virtual but there'd still be a virtual in and out. In either case you'd need to set Cakewalk up so its track outputs to a midi port and not to your sound card.

It's not clear what Cakewalk program you're using. Cakewalk Home Studio? Pro Audio? I use their Sonar program myself. You can get very specific guidance on configuring the program you're using from the forums at http://forum.cakewalk.com
