So, when I'm at the piano, I can sit there and improv a rather good melody no problem...but when I'm sitting with blank sheet music or in sibleius, my melodies are just....soso. Any advice on how to write melody away from the piano?

Rather than sitting there just with blank music paper or with Sibelius, try singing. Then write down what you sing.

Practice, practice, practice.

A couple of references: "Fundamentals of Musical Composition" by Arnold Schoenberg and Goetschius's "Exercises in Melody Writing."

The latter: http://books.google.com/books?id=N14QAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=exercises+in+melody+writing

Singing is good. I've no idea why I hadn't thought of that, but it makes perfect sense. :]. And I'll look into those exercises. Thanks!
Also I ought to start writing what I play on the piano too...rather than just improving everything.
