Here's one of my publishing agreements pertaining to sheet music. Sorry, I won't post their names for obvious reasons. My other legitimate publishers (4 of them) pay 50%.

"shall pay, to Assignor a royalty of 25% of the income actually received for the sale of the sheet music of the “Work”

A bit more than your 17% (which was 7% higher than the normal rate). That would make the normal rate 10% (in your opinion) - I don't think so.

A composer's hard work should be rewarded at least as much as the businessman's take.

John

In the UK, 10% is the absolute standard for sheet music royalties.
We totally agree the composers hard work must be rewarded and thus we offer 17% of the RRP.

Hi James,

I'm interested in publishing. I went to your web site and looked around a bit I have some questions.

Under A&R you state, "We are looking for artistic individuals who can cater for the needs of the modern musician and audience, providing not only entertainment, but art as well." In my experience I've seen those two to be somewhat at odds. It takes real skill to be both entertaining and artistic, but balancing the two is a personal and very individual choice. It's something every composer does, which means to me that your statement is meaningless, it applies to any capable and sincere composer. I believe it applies to me, but others may differ. What's important is whether the music fits the style of your publishing house and nothing on your site indicates where your strength is in that area.

So I'm going to make it easy for you and for me. I compose in two worlds 1) strictly classical oriented, somewhat modern piano and orchestral music. 2) pop/rock oriented at what some call New Spirituality. I invite you to have a listen at the sites in my sig. For classical piano check out "In such a small place" and my "Rhapsody." For the pop/rock stuff just go to the bottom link.

If you like what you hear PM me.

Hi Steve

Devilish Publishing enjoys a bit of variety and this is where its strength comes from.

Up 'till now, we have mainly published music for Brass Band and have smaller catalogues in other classical idioms as well as Jazz.

You are welcome to submit any classical manuscript you like (this thread is only targeting Piano composers but can apply to those who write other idioms of classical music) In general, we tend not to go for overly-modern manuscripts, but we judge each submission individually.

My advice to you is submit your best and most recent portfolio and we will have a look at it and see if we have a market for it and if we can help your career in the process.

Regretably, we only accept submissions by post (not by email or using 3rd party music sites like Soundclick et al)

Hope this helps.

Hmm - I might be interested. I have a few pieces I'm actively working on at the moment. When I complete them to my satisfaction I may try some of them as submissions. Thanks for the invitation.

We do have a sister off-shoot, Devilish Records - http://www.devilishpublishing.co.uk/devilishrecords

You are welcome to submit material for use on the Devilish Records label. However, it is in it's infancy but we hope to be spending more time on it this year. Submit material if you like, but at this stage of Dev Records, we cannot guarantee much - we'll see what we can do!
