Hi to all,
i like piano very much but this time, although its very hard to me, I didnt use the piano and choose th string quartet, here you can listen to the main thema, its about 1,5 minutes long, starting with 1. violin solo and then the viola and finally the cello takes the leading thema.

String quartet thema MP3:

I listened last night and twice again this morning. There are some interesting ideas here, but the rhythm is very square. Dotted rhythm could work wonders to give your theme more propulsion. My first inclination would be the fourth note of your theme (right after the eighth notes). Changing that note to a dotted quarter would go a long way toward changing the nature of your theme. Whether you continue in dotted rhythm after that would be up to you. Just off the top of my head syncopating the beginning of the latter part of the phrase would also be fun. Seek to remove the sqaureness from all aspects of your theme from rhythm of your melodies to the length of your phrases.

On my way to work I listened to two pieces that exemplify this thinking. The first was William Walton Crown Imperial. The melodies in this piece are either jaunty or English pomp, but never stodgy. The rhythm is clear, yet unpredictable and as such always a pleasant surprise. The second piece was Bach's Canonic Variations on Von Himmel Hoch. The accompaniment in one of the vations is quick yet also unpredictable. Music becomes quickly boring when we think we know where it's going.
