What do you think of them?
what is your favorite game music?

Anyway i have a question, this piece is composed by a game composer called rob hubbard
http://rapidshare.de/files/13944831/game_000.mid.html (midi file)

I like it, it is polyphonic. Is the fact that it is polyphonic that the composer is a good one?
And how can you start composing a piece with more than one voice? Any experience here?

Another question please, is counterpoint harder than normal monophonic composing?

I don't think there's any one criteria that makes a composer a good one - it's a combination of many factors. I listened to the excerpt and I thought it wasn't too bad, but I wasn't blown away by it either.

Composing with counterpoint is definitely more difficult than writing music with a single melodic line. You need to be able to fit multiple melodic ideas together so that they complement each other.

As for how to do this, one suggestion might be to try to write a simple invention-type piece in the style of Bach. It can be a tricky exercise, but it might help you to try to think of ways to make a melodic line accompany itself.

How about a 4-part fugue in the style of Bach. Here's one I composed with the idea of being used in a video game. I'm still looking for that video game creator. Considering people play these games for hours on end, it would be a great way to get one's music listened to.

I agree with you, it is just video game music

I am just surprised that a game music composer can compose a polyphonic piece that i believed maybe he stole it from a classical piece

but this made me think that some of them may have real talent

listen to warcraft 2: composer Glenn stafford also has orchestral talents

It's amusing that anyone would think that a professional game composer would have to steal to create something memorable.

Do you have any idea at all how much money is put into creating games these days? These folks earn big bucks and it's not because they have inferior talents.

Do you mean they earn bigger bucks than ordinary composers?

Any fellow composers here in the game business and earning big bucks? \:D

No, I haven't got into the game business yet. Can you direct me? I know some music libraries have these kind of tracks, but I don't know how successful they are.

Does this one have a chance:

I'm just a gamer -i'm not in the business \:D but one thing i must tell you that the piece must have the spirit or the theme of the game played
for example, the warcraft midis above is about a strategy game which has the theme of war

OF course you can't be a game music developer without being a gamer yourself - i think most of these composers are also game developers

here are some game music pages if you want to hear such things:
http://www.mirsoft.info/index.php
http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=music_list

I liked your piece - but what type of game you see it will fit into?

Any tips on composing multi-part polyphonic pieces?

Hey Bassio,

Compose a short theme first (2-4 meas.). Best not to get to complex with this (save room for variation).

Start the piece off by just stating the theme. Then try a scale type contrapuntal part that will work with it. When the theme returns throughout the piece make variations on it (different octaves, raise a 5th, change from major to minor, etc.) - but make sure the theme is still recognizable.

In between these themes you need episodes. Episodes can have some of the elements of the theme, but should be like a bridge connecting the multiple themes.

This should get you started.

Best, John

P.S. Glad you liked my piece. Maybe a new Mario or something similar would work. Maybe a "War of the Composers" game.

I can't agree with the latter half of the statement. There are some very good selections from VGs, written by some top-notch composers. Here are a few composers who have scored music for VGs:

Danny Elfman
Howard Shore (though, realistically, only for "Lord of the Rings")
Hans Zimmer
J.S. Bach
Beethoven
This guy did cartoons...
And of course... John Williams

Yes, I disagreed with the latter half also.

I've been more fortunate with background music for TV. Anything goes there.

The thing about video games is the music has to be loopable.

Derulux, i'm sorry i misphrased the sentence .. you are right
i have never been a man who decides whether music is good or not based on its genre ..

I just wanted to tell 8ude just don't give it such a big concern because i think no one knows that game music can be good if he is not a gamer (like 8ude i guess \:D ) and has not heard it before!

I am a gamer all my childhood, and i loved game music before i knew classical music (in fact maybe listening to those amazing tunes helped me like classical music afterwards .. who knows?)
That's why i opened this game music topics on two forums ;\) just wanting to know more about these composers and compositions .. they really may have talent that is not noticed in today's musical world
