Direct motion

As I understand it direct motion is when the same interval proceeds in the same direction.
What happens when different intervals proceed in the same direction? This seems to not fit into any of the definitions of motion.

Hmmmmm!

We call that similar motion. That is, any voices moving in the same direction, whether they are parallel, direct, or otherwise. This would still fall under Fux's direct motion.

Fux's rule is that no perfect consonance may follow an other perfect consonance, or an imperfect consonance, by direct motion. For example, a perfect 5th followed by a perfect 5th with both voices moving in the same direction, what we call parallel 5ths, would be prohibited. Furthermore, say, a major 3rd to a perfect 5th with both voices moving in the same direction, what we may call a direct 5th, would also be prohibited.

But, let's say you have a unison moving to a major 3rd with both voices moving in the same direction - that would be allowed because, although it's direct motion, it's a perfect consonance moving to an imperfect consonance.
