I'm working on a wind quintet, inspired by Samuel Barber's "Summer Music".

It is not even close to being finished, but I would appreciate some comments on the general direction and feel of the piece in its current state.

This is a direct export from Sibelius using the EWQL Gold library.

I hear some very interesting harmonies and in that aspect there's a lot to like. What I don't hear are strong themes. That may be a conscious choice or that may be the nature of a woodwind quintet. If there's a melody in there it's buried beneath the accompaniment. So where were you thinking this piece wopuld go from here?

I think I would like to introduce a prominent melody shortly after this section, starting with thinner instrumentation and gradually building back up to a fuller sound. Later on there will be another section with a different character but probably still utilizing the 3 against 2 rhythmic patterns incorporated here. I would then like some sort of climax incorporating both major sections, eventually returning to a feel similar to what is at the beginning.

I'm not very good at laying out the structure I want beforehand. I tend to follow a simple ABA form and the final A section sounds too much like the first one. So I'm trying to get away from that a little bit. What I described above may be too close to this pattern...any ideas for something different?

I was going to comment that this opening section could serve as a slow intro to something more lively, but lively implies a very strong theme. What I would do is take what motives you can from the intro and craft the catchiest theme you can from those materials. Think Walton's Crown Imperial or Beethoven's 4th Symphony (hoping that's the one with the slow intro and then the quick rising scales). You need some memorable moments and then the structure will start to resolve itself as you explore the contrast between the two.
