How would you notate this? In 4/4 time, three notes occupy the time of four beats. In other words the duration of each note is 1,1/3 beats.

Yes, half note triplets. Although, counting this in 4/4 is quite difiicult.

Thanks Steven and Harmosis. That sounds logical.

And I don't try to count it. It's an intuitive thing like taking liberties with the rhythm. You just feel it and do it.

It's not particularly hard to count. You just have to count 8th note triplets in your head and it goes like this:

1[/b] 2 3 1 2[/b] 3 1 2 3[/b] 1 2 3

After that, you'll just need a little bit of practice to get rid of the syncopated feel that kind of counting usually produces and make it flow.
I have an ice cream. I cannot mail it, for it will melt.

Hi jw from Texas,

Triplets are used as a means of speeding up duple-time within the given tempo ... but, in your particular case, might well introduce the impression of slowing down if the prevailing rhythm is driven by quarter notes.

Yes, half-note triplets.
