When making an initial play thru of the notes which I want to use for an arrangement of an old standard, it turned out that I want to use all the flats in Gb. Before today, I wouldn't have even looked at this key for a pop song.

Are there any devices that composers have routinely used when they wanted to brighten a key?

I find shoe polish often brightens nicely.

Otherwise, I'm afraid you'd have to be more specific. ;\)

When I posted, I had in mind that Gb would be too dark for the tune. Maybe that's because I hadn't ever worked anywhere near that key. I'm still sort of noodling chords in Eb thru Gb, but it looks like I can go to Gb, without worrying about "darkness."

And actually, your post reminded me that there is a pair of shoes that needs shining.
