Joe Hisaishi is the best, hands down. "River Side" is my favorite piece.

All already mentioned but I have to repeat:

Michael Nyman - Everything from The Piano
Hans Zimmer - Gladiator and many others that I watch the film and remark "this music is great" and then find out he wrote it
Thomas Newman - American Beauty particularly the gorgeously minimalistic main piece from it
James Horner - Providing you erase the Celine Dion version from your memory and listen only to Horner's original, The Portrait, it is a beautiful piece of music
