This may or may not be the correct forum to ask this question but I am at a dead end. This will be x-posted to the pianist forum.

I've just started Fux's exercises from Gradus ad Parnassum. After Fux's first two exercises in the section on first species counterpoint (one note per measure, expressing only consonances) in which he asks to realize the counterpoint above and below the cantus firmus set in the Dorian mode he goes on to ask that the CF be realized in E, F, G, A, and C. My question is: does he mean to set the CF in the various modes or the major scales starting on those tones?

I don't want to have to unlearn something fundamental. Thanks for your replies.

You've got the right forum! Fux is asking you to provide counterpoint in the modes. There has been much discussion of Fux in this forum - if you do a search, you'll find lots of good info.
