I use Anvil Studios b/c it's free. It might be quirky but it's free.

So I was wondering. Do Any of you use software when composing?

Sure. Sibelius 4 for writing it all out, then it gets exported to Cubase where it gets the VST instrument treatment (The Grand2, Groove Agent2, stuff like that) and receives it's mixdown. It admittedly is a bit expensive (around $2000 in total) but truly great pieces of software. The only thing I'm scared of is losing the USB hardware protection Steinberg uses...

Arjen has a pro setup. What do you want to do that you can't now do with Anvil?

I use a lesser known program called "Desktop Sheet Music 2003" for XP. I'd never heard of it before, but it's a great little program that's a snap to use. It has a few bugs here and there, but is totally sufficient. It's put out by a company called Interactive Digital Design. Never heard of that either... *shrug* works great for me and it only cost 39.99. That price tag beats the crap outta Sibelius and the program spits out totally professional looking results. No complaints here.

Does anyone have any experience with the Garrison Personal Orchestra? I think that's what makes the high end versions of Finale and Sibelius so expensive is that they include these instrument sounds for playback that are suppose to be more realistic. I haven't heard it but I know getting the Garrison Personal Orchestra by itself is fairly expensive so if Sibelius and Finale high end software comes with it, it may be worth it.

What does everyone use for their instrument sounds?

Right now I'm just using Finale's free Notepad version to get me by for notating until I make up my mind what I want to purchase. I noticed if I upgrade even from their free version, it appears I can get a $10 discount.

Nothing, I love Anvil and I was just stating that I use it. Sure I would love to have what Arjen has ,but Anvil is 100% free. You just can't beat that price! ;\)

Hi! I need to just write down a series of realized chords for someone to play on the organ. Just have a computer/ keyboard, and printer. Will Anvil Studios work for this purpose and do I just download it from their web-site?

I'm not familiar with Anvil Studios but Finale has a free version of notation software that can be downloaded from their site.
