Hello everyone,

A while back, I created a video that explains how to take an initial 2-bar melody and turn it into a full 8-bar phrase.

I wanted to share it here. Find the video on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejJtUdqW8ko

Thanks,
Edward

Hi Libby,

My pleasure! Actually, in my next lesson, I'll be showing my students how I take a small melodic idea and turn it into a full ABA composition.

I can't wait. I also look forward to when you explain your left hand and your right hand marriage. What to do in the space of the melody. Everyone says just fill it with notes, but I keep to the same notes of the chord and it gets really boring. I noticed you and others are filling with counter beats, counter melodies or something that I just can't pick up on. Any clarity would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Libby,

It's all about how you use the element of time. I personally like it when music "breathes" and is played rubato.

Chopin did this a lot. And so do I. \:\)

The best advice I can give for creating interesting melodies is not being constrained by the confinements of a scale, you'll be surprised at the interesting sound you can create by using notes not in the scale as a leading tone.
