Note: the original thread for this was lost during the forum change over, if i have missed anyone I sincerely apologise

The idea was proposed in the Adult Beginner’s Forum’s Proposed Chopin Nocturne Recital List that the Pianist Corner organises a “Concert Etude Recital”.

The date has been chosen as July 31st, Liszt’s death date, to commemorate his fantastic work in the style. Only 1 performance of each piece may be done (eg. no “double ups”) as well as the title of the piece referring to, or including the word “etude”

A big thank you to YD who has kindly offered a website to host the collection of fantastic performances i’m sure we’ll hear

I do wish I would have known about this - I am studying Op. 25 no 7 this semester.

I've been extremely busy this past semester, and I haven't had the 3 hours a day I'd need to be practicing to get the Liszt down. I'm going to have to withdraw from the recital.

Hi playadom,

I PM'ed Zac a few days ago to submit a tentative La Leggierezza offer[1], having been slightly disappointed that someone had already bagged Wilde Jagd. So now I don't know what to do! smile

Can an unfavorable forum member, somebody who's pretty much personae non grata in this section enter this jamboree? frown

If I can enter, I'll at least serve to provide a suitable tomato target if y'all bring your baskets of rotten veggies. wink

Can I play my own version of a Chopin or Liszt Etude, or must it be performed as written? tired tired yawn

Can I enter with an Etude of my own composition; something guaranteed to confound and bewilder? thumb

of course you can BJones, you can play anything you like, I'd be very interested in hearing your own etude composition(s). The only stipulation to what you play is that it has "etude" in its title otherwise its completly up to you

I actually just started composing an etude this weekend. Now I have an incentive to learn it!

I'm not going to have Chopin op.10 no.5 ready by July, I don't think. I had an operation on my right hand last month for an infected cat bite which disrupted the practise schedule a little, as you can imagine. I might well have op.10 no.2 in a usable state though.

I'll take a look at my book of Chopin etudes and see what isn't taken yet.

One problem is my parents' piano is out of tune, and I have black keys that stick on my electronic keyboard (probably because it's next to the air conditioner). I would ask to get the piano tuned (I always offer to pay for this sort of thing, like I did when the b flat string popped up), but because my grandfather is in the hospital with a serious illness I do not feel comfortable asking them to have the piano tuned right now. I feel like it would be kind of insensitive.

I would like to reserve Op 25, No. 11. I havn't played it before but I think I can pull it off by July if I work on it in sections and focus on my fingering.

Thanks for the great opportunity.

Yes, you (or whoever) records you playing.

By the way, changing the subject a little, it occurred to me the other day that it's worth mentioning that if one is TOO slick, there may be requests to prove it really is the person represented as playing that is actually playing. Attempts to fake everyone out have happened before with this sort of self-produced stuff in various forums.

I know but for a variety of reasons it just isn't going to happen by July. I used to play the "revolutionary" but never played any of the others. I used to play the c sharp minor scherzo also but have forgotten all of it. I used to know how to play the ravel sonatine, Rhapsody in Blue (most of it), carolina shout, and the closing theme from Empire Strikes Back, but I've forgotten it all.

Maybe I'll get my act together but it's difficult because practicing piano means taking time away from composing, and I really don't have much time to begin with.

Zac or YD, could you let us know how/when to upload our files? I'm going to be travelling in France up until the end of July and am not sure I'll be back for the 7/31 deadline. I would be able to upload the file before I leave (mid-June).

Thanks!

I am still telling myself that I'll have Rach 39/4, if not as ready as I'd like, at least not so abjectly horrible that I'll chicken out at the last minute. I have never put anything on the internet before and I am getting these "why on earth did you say you'd do that?" moments. shocked

Hi... i got

Rachmaninoff - Etude Tableux Op. 39 No. 6 - A minor

audio http://www.rickerchoi.com/audio/Rachmaninoff-EtudeTableux-39-6.mp3

video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kf69jq1x3Z8&feature=channel

I love the way I played in the audio file, but I think better to show video too (which however is a different performance and I don´t quite like how I did play)

Synapse - sure we would love to have you join in. I think Rachmaninoff 39/5 is still up for grab. After you record your piece, send the MP3 file or the link to zp3929 or YD. Don't post it here smile

zp3929 - on your first post in this thread, can you re-sort the selections like all the Chopin Etudes together and in their order, Liszt Transcendental Etudes together, etc.?

I can perform Chopin 10/9 for it if you like smile

edit: if 10/9 doesn't qualify for a concert etude, I'll tentatively say that I'll have Chopin 25/12 ready in time (can't believe no one's taken it yet!)

I must add a big question mark to my participation in this. I've been all too busy composing this year and have had very little time to sit down at the piano. The same continues throughout this summer. frown I certainly won't be able to record all 12 etudes of Szymanowski's op33, but I might be able to do a selection of 5-6 etudes. I'm not sure if I want to do this as the opus is supposed to be performed as a whole, all etudes attacca, but is it okay with you if I choose this solution?

I think other than the idea that the pieces must be etudes, you are free to choose as you like. I'd certainly vote for some of the set rather than none. Incidentally, long ago I had one of those "(X Number) of Pieces from the Modern Repertoire" type of collections, and it did have just one of those Szymanowksi op. 33 etudes all by its lonesome. I don't know if the Szymanowski himself authorized it to be published like that or not.

I was listed as doing Chopin 10/10, and it did not get transferred to that list. I'm still seeing how it will come out, though.

I don't think anyone said it was a "beginner etude."

From the first post:

The idea was proposed in the Adult Beginner’s Forum’s Proposed Chopin Nocturne Recital List that the Pianist Corner organises a “Concert Etude Recital”.

I just assumed because it was in the Adult Beginner section that the level was implied. Oops.

Oh, that's what you meant. Yes, the idea came from a Chopin etude, and chopin Nocturne online recitals from the Adult Beginners Forum, although even those pieces are not "beginner."

If I would have known about it sooner, I would've played 10/8. Unfortunately, I just don't have the time. Good luck!

Guys, my teacher wants me to move on from this etude and start two Chopin etudes, which I will NOT have up in time for this recital laugh . I made a recording of the Mozskowski a few weeks ago, but it's definitely not my best. Better to submit a crappy recording or no recording at all?

Ha July 31st is my Birthday, this will be the best present ever, thanks you guys. Unfortunately the only etude I know is Chopin op.10 no.12, but I don't have it anywhere performance level since I forgot how to play it. Maybe I can finish one of my etude compositions.

I'm sorry, gonna have to resign completely from this. The concert falls on the same day as my next orchestration deadline and I haven't really had time to practise seriously the last weeks. I might post a recording of the etudes later on the forums when I get them in shape.

Unfortunately I have to back out as well frown I was making some good headway last month, but school has been incredibly hectic this past month, AND I just moved to a new apartment, so I have been spending my spare time unpacking rather than practicing. Ditto on posting recordings eventually on the recordings forum.

It's not looking good for me, either, which is embarrassing considering that I probably have the least challenging etude of the lot. Perhaps that's the reason I neglected to start it until late May; it's just not yet where it should be.

I do plan to soldier on! As the details about submitting our recordings haven't yet been announced and the deadline not yet specified, it's in the realm of possibility that I will still participate.

Yes, instructions would be good to have. In what format should we provide the file? Wav, FLAC, mp3?

I am continuing to work on my Rach E-T, and have been recording my practice runs. It isn't really going to be ready, but so it goes - I've decided to upload the best take of it I've got, no matter how bad.

Instructions for submission to the recital:

All recital submissions should be in mp3. I suggest you stay within reasonable bit rate so that your file is not so huge that people have trouble downloading it. You can either put it on Box.net (or anywhere else) and e-mail me the link, or e-mail me your submission at my private e-mail ydrozd _at_ gmail _dot_ com (replace _at_ with @ and _dot_ with .) if it is within size limit that is accepted by gmail (<20MB or so?).

The website for recital will be
http://www.etuderecital.org/

Deadline for submission is Wednesday, Jul 29, at 23:59. (I need some time to put all the stuff in order there). The website will go live Thursday evening.

Please try to adhere to the deadline - I am leaving on an unavoidable trip Thursday night, so anything that I receive later than Thursday morning I may not be able to add to the website.

P.S. LA- I received your submission, thank you!

We are getting submission instructions and a deadline with only a two day notice?! shocked

Here is my situation: I had asked for submission info at the end of May (since I was going abroad until 7/31) but didn't get a response; I would have submitted my recording before I left.

Until I saw the deadline posted this morning I had assumed (and was hoping) we would have up to the 31st to submit our recordings. The earliest I can submit it would be Friday, upon my return.

Under the circumstances I'm hoping my recording can be included. I'd hate for it to be disqualified due to a technicality - a lot went into making it! smile

Thanks.

Or if necessary, maybe his contribution can be sort of an encore, posted after the rest? I definitely want to hear it.

We already have too many dropouts. I certainly would like all that have put in the work for this recital to be in. And of course I don't want to miss Whippen Boy performance of Paysage.

YD - is there anyone else that is capable to do the posting for you while you are away?

As long as I get it before I have to leave on Thursday, I'll post whatever I receive. Sice the official recital day is Friday, my plan was to go live Thursday California time, which would already be Friday in Europe and Asia. Hence the deadline.

If somebody volunteers to take charge of the website after I leave, e-mail me, I'll share login info.

Hello again,

Thanks everyone for the 'warm & fuzzy' comments. smile Thanks also for trying to help me with my weird travel situation.

I'm currently on the 'other' coast, away from my computer (which is where the recording is located).

OH! I just had a flash of inspiration... I recall sending a CD to the person who is my host currently; that piece should be on it, and the disk should be around here somewhere! laugh

I don't have a 'real' computer here so uploading will require some extra steps (assuming I find the disk, etc.).

But this just might work...

Thanks.

PS. It's better late than never. If you will have your recording by Saturday or Sunday, please submit it.

Greetings everybody!

I have to leave for a trip in 15 minutes. I am making the recital public now. However, LisztAddict has all the necessary skills and access info to make additions if new entries become available. Great performances, everybody, I really enjoyed these.

Kind regards,

Thank you YD, and LisztAddict for all your work.

I really enjoyed every one of the performances. I hope some others are added in the next few days.

My submission wasn't really ready for prime time, I know, but am surprised it didn't show up in the list at all. smile

I am thinking I might add a couple from Szymanowski's op. 33 tomorrow, since RogerW released that set (I hope he posts them later as he said he might - they are wonderful pieces).

I just noticed that the downloadable mp3 link for madrigal's submission is broken.

Thankyou YD and Liszt! stunning performances by everyone! There still seems to be quite a few people missing if i'm not mistaken which is a great shame. If anyone does have a performance still to submit i'm sure we could find a way to post it onto the site

Thanks everyone for their fantastic work, and hope you all enjoy!

I wanted to thank LisztAddict and YD for making the necessary corrections so promptly. All the links work perfectly now.

Kudos to everyone that has been involved in organizing and performing at this e-cital.

I have just listened to all the pieces, and want to congratulate each and every one of you for your wonderful performances! wow
Every piece was beautifully played, and I can only imagine all the hard work that went into learning and polishing them. Well done!
This concert was quite a nice treat for a rainy Friday morning smile

Thank you for listening, Chardonnay. I am still hoping to have more participants. I know many people chose very tough pieces, but I think they can pull through. smile

Too bad duplicates weren't allowed. There might have been more participants. I enjoyed listening to all the posted pieces.

Yes please, go ahead. It will be a while until I'm ready to post the whole set. I've been orchestrating 24/7 the past month and will have to keep doing that still for a while (even though I'm already past my deadline...), haven't touched my piano since June... I hope the Szymanowski etudes aren't in too bad shape when I find time to practise again. But I will learn the whole set, I've put too much work into it to just abandon it. So don't worry, eventually I will post a recording.

Oh, and I will listen to this recital as soon as my score is off to the copyist! smile

LA, yours is the only I've heard yet, because it is the only TE, with which I have some familiarity by way of listening. Fireworks! Fast double-thirds, the whole nine yards. You handled those crazy contra arps at the end with aplomb. Bravo! cool smokin

Thank you gerg. smile Those arps are just weird. Sometimes I could play them really well, and some other times they are just a total mess.

You need to listen to all other recordings too. Every piece is just stunning.

LisztAddict,

You might want to create an announcement thread here in the Pianists Corner and have one of the moderators sticky it for a couple of weeks. That would make locating and listening to the recital much easier.

Ugh! They're relocating all the pianos in town for the renovated music school, and I have no place to record. frown

What a wonderful treat!! wow I've always thought y'all should have online recitals over here... after all, you guys can really *play*!! laugh

The recital website setup is terrific, by the way. We had talked about doing something like that for the AB forum recitals but decided against it. We may need to revisit the idea after seeing how nice your etude page looks.

I'm really enjoying hearing some of my favorite PW posters play. Thanks!

Is this renovation due to the flooding a couple summers ago?
I remember seeing photos of Iowa City and the campus during and after the big flood.

Wow some of these sound amazing. I think a necessary addition to the table should be model of piano the recording was made with. Also what recording equipment was used. Can we get this info put in?

Great. I was expecting more pieces though. smile

Pieces I already knew:

Chopin Op. 10 No. 3: Bravo! You played the middle part really well too.

Rachmaninoff Op. 39 No. 6: Absolutely wicked!

Scriabin Op. 8 No. 12: Nice and clean version. I'm missing some power in the bass notes. Someday I hope to play this one too.

Very good indeed, some very lovely lyricism. LisztAddict added it after the others were already online, so some here may not be aware it is there. So folks, go check it out.

Yes, very good and I didn't notice it. I kept looking at the end of the list for late-comers. Thanks for mentioning it!

I just listened to all of the performances. While I'm not familiar with each composer represented, I can still tell when a work requires great skill and artistic nuance.

Each one of you is a scintillating light of inspiration to everyone who takes to the bench. Thank you so much, every one who made this happen! thumb

Thank you, also, to the organizers who handled the nitty-gritty details of domain registration, site hosting, and the like, making this recital possible.

Applause all around!

gerg, I agree with everything you've just said, and thanks for drawing attention to this recital. I didn't realize until tonight that there was a limited time window rather than it being an ongoing thing, so I've visited and listened to all the performances, just in case they disappear soon. shocked

And that expiration date is June 4, 2010. (I don't know why, but I was surprised at how quickly I could find this info on the web.)

Just had a chance to listen to the first two recordings... Whippen Boy, fantastic playing of the Etude #3 by Liszt!!!

chopin 952- sparkling playing on #5.

As soon as I have some down time I'm listening to all of the recordings. What a treat.

I play Liszt's Transcendental Etudes 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 10, 11 & 4 & 12 at a pinch.

If there was another recital opportunity, I would love to have a crack at the Liapunov Transcendental edutes which seem, after a quick evaluation of the scores, rather more challenging than Liszt's.

rsoares - you are welcome to download the files and put on a CD if you like.

PartyPianist - do you have any Etude ready, besides those already played, that you want to submit?
