Hi, I'm new to the forum and know little about pianos. I hope you can help me on the following questions.

Recently, I started to look for a piano for my 6-year-old son. He wanted to learn how to play piano. I came across a new Remington 48" upright piano (model RV-121) at a local piano dealer. It looked great and sounded good to my untrained ears and it was also affordable (under 3,000 USD).

I searched Remington's website but couldn't find the model RV-121. The only 48" model listed on their website is RVM-121 but it looks different to me. Does anyone know the difference between RV-121 and RVM-121? Does Remington still produce RV-121? If not, why it stopped producing RV-121?

Thanks so much.

I thought that there are some people here representing or selling Pramberger/Remington and they might tell me some insight info.

Anyway, I looked more and found some other options. At about the same price as the Remington RV-121, I can buy a used Yamaha P2 (1966) from the same dealer or buy a new Kohler & Campbell KC-142 from a different dealer. Which deal do you think is the best for a 6-year-old? Should I look for more options if I cannot afford more? Thank you very much for your opinion.

The dealers participate more frequently during weekdays, please be patient. That Yamaha from 1966 is too old, you may be better served by a newer instrument.

Some more info on the Remington RV-121: the one I found looks almost exactly like a Pramberger PV-121 and it looks nothing like the Remington RVM-121.

If I am not mistaken, the Remmington stencil is the generic line from Samick's factory in Indonesia. This product line is distributed under several brand names owned by Samick. I have found their recent products to be good value for their price points.

Thanks gest1013 and Marty.

It seemed that nobody else in PW were interested in that piano or the questions. I didn't know if it was a good deal or not but decided to buy the Remington anyway since it included a 10-year full trade-up policy.

Yes, congratulations. Do you have a teacher? There are lots of tips on the Piano Teacher forum for choosing one.
It will help your piano to have it tuned as recommended by the manufacturer & dealer, perhaps three times the first year, and then twice a year after that. You may also get recommendations for good piano technicians from your piano teacher.

Besides referrals, you may find a piano technician through www.ptg.org Plus the site has information on taking care of a piano, and some activities for children.
