I'm looking for classical tunes which are hauntingly dark, yet carry a beautiful melody on top of it. Anybody have any suggestions?

o let me see..."Solveig's Song"- Grieg, many by Rachmaninoff, many Bach arias from the Cantatas- let me give you the solo bass aria that begins the Cantata- what # is it? "Ich will die Kreuz gerne tragen" which concerns happiness but only if you are CARRYING A CROSS!?!?! I would gladly carry the cross- or - there are so many in Bach- you could start w Bach. best, dave in baltimore, md. usa

"La chanson de la folle au bord de la mer" ("The Song of the wicked woman on the coast of the sea") by Alkan
Isn't that supposed to be mad woman, as in insane?

Isn't that supposed to be mad woman, as in insane? Insane is what the music sounds like. I guess the French folle is ethymologically related to the English foolish, bu follish seems an understatement in her case

.. it seems to me that the inherent nature [of the piano tone] becomes really expressive only by means of the present tendency to use the piano as a percussion instrument - Béla Bartók, early 1927.

"Ante El Escorial" is Ernesto Lecuona's masterpiece. It starts out in perhaps the darkest key of all, e flat minor. The middle section in G flat is exquisitely beautiful. The great Thomas Tirino playing it at a live concert: Lecuona Ante El Escorial Tirino A hauntingly beautiful, dark piece that I greatly enjoy playing is Manuel Maria Ponce's Intermezzo No.1: Ponce Intermezzo No.1 Another favorite dark and hauntingly beautiful piece is Cécile Chaminade's "Au Pays Dévasté", written in 1919, just after WWI. The score is at IMSLP: Chaminade Au Pays Dévasté Mel
