As a roving piano tech, I usually spend a big part of my day--1 to 2 hours normally--in my vehicle. Music is great to listen to in the morning when I'm feeling fresh and frisky on my way to my first job or two. By then end of the day, though, I don't want to listen to it any more.

To provide a distraction while weaving through the greater metro SF Bay Area, I borrowed my wife's unabridged "Heart of Darkness," by Joseph Conrad on CD. All told, it was about 6 hours long, which took a little over 3 days. And I really began to look forward to getting in the car!

Sam Casey noted a while back that he's a big fan of audio books. I'm now a convert. After listening to "Heart of Darkness," though, I'll never view ivory quite the same way.

If you're tired of tunes, had plenty of PBS, or you're wretching at Rush, check out some literature on the road.

Thanks for the suggestion, Sam!

And if you want something even different, check out The Teaching Company.

http://www.teach12.com/teach12.aspx

Audio and video lectures on a huge variety of disciplines from the foremost college and university professors in the country. I think they are available as mp3 now, if you have an iPod. They may even be on iTunes.

I'll put in my plug for Dr. Robert Greenburg's series of courses on music. He is extremely knowledgeable, a superb teacher, and a professional composer. His courses are among the most popular from the Teaching Company.
