Hi,guys,

I need your help. I have recently bought a second hand samick piano from an authorized Alex.Steinbach dealer. Its model no. is SC-300NST, serial no. is IRC 01747. As I am a beginner to piano, I know piano nothing at all. My teacher said to me this piano is not a real upright piano! It is at least 40-70 years old!! But the dealer told me it is 16-20 years old. He also gives me 10 years warranty.

P.S. tried to search for it on internet but in vain.

I am feeling quite flat and confused. Any input will be appreciated.

This Samick model was not imported or marketed in the USA. Not quite sure where worldwide Samick exports this mdl.It is a
46 1/2" studio strung back but in what they call a Medievil Oak console type case. Your teacher is wrong in that it is in essence a studio piano in a console type cabinet. Via the serial # it was manufactured in 1998. Your teacher probably thought it was from some ancient temple in the Medievil era in Seoul.Just a modern piano in a vintage cabinet.

thank you very much for your reply,Pianobroker. It is not a bad news to me.

There is "Imperial German Scale" logo on the right of keyboard. The dealer opened the cover underneath this piano comparing to another Yamaha second hand piano in the same height. He explained to me that the string wires used in this piano are longer than other pianos due to the acuteness of their angle.

Having read some articles about "Alex.Steinbach Piano" which has the German Imperial Scale" design, what the dealer said seems right. Does it mean my piano has got these features of "German Imperial Scale"?

I paid Australian Dollar $4000 for this piano. Is this piano worth this money? I understand it varies depending on individual piano. I just want to get a brief idea of it as my teacher said this piano is not worth AUD$4000.

Thank you in advance for any reply.

"Imperial German Scale" means, that "Klaus Fenner" gave his blessing on all the Samick pianos of that era. Sounds like your typical retail sales pitch. grin
It's a nice piano and should do you fine for years to come.

I have heard the following statements more than once.
Are they true?

1. A good piano has no age.
2. Choosing a good piano is to choose a good soundboard.

1. It's good as long as it's age hasn't affected how good it is.
2. A good soundboard alone doesn't necessarily make a good piano though it is a prerequisite along with many variables that make a piano good. wink
