So this morning I was breezing around on NPR…it is something I like to do on Sunday mornings. I found this radio interview with one of our members. I hope he doesn’t mind me posting this here. An example of how many of us in this technical field go the extra mile to make things right. Nice work Peter and great interview! Keep this one in your files. I hope you don't mind that I found this one.....

Nice interview! And Peter has just as wonderful a voice as the Steinway D!

Oh gosh, you guys....

Seriously though...thanks to Dan for my 15 minutes of fame. AND to you for your kind comments.

That "D" was selected at Sherman Clay's old store in Walnut Creek, CA...it sounded big and impressive in the store and it behaved itself during the prepping process.
When I got to Sitka, a bunch of us got it on it's legs and I let it relax overnight...it was waaay past 9pm as it was and I'd been travelling all day.
At 9am next morning I tried the piano and realized that I had work to do...The power seemed diminished in the big hall, a 600 seater and it didn't sound as I remembered it.
I came to the conclusion that it had had a hard journey....two days on the road north in freezing temps and then a barge from Seattle to Sitka.
Then a short road trip from the dock to the stage at 32 to 35 degrees F.
I figured the hammers had picked up a little moisture...but very hard to tell.

I went through the usual steps before deciding to add juice and then, thanks to Randy, the schools woodshop teacher, I 'borrowed' some sanding sealer and acetone. I was very careful not to get the hammers too hard as I know the instrument will have to run the gamut of genres and performer's tastes.
The rest of the job went by the book and you heard the results on the recording.

It demonstrated to me, once more, that all pianos are very much a product of their environment and need individual attention to make them shine, especially after a grueling trip.

Thanks to Raven Radio's Robert Woolsey, who compressed over an hour of my manic ramblings into something I will always treasure.

I am looking forward to returning next February...Sitka is an amazing place and the people are outstanding.
Cheers

I sent this link to my piano tuner immediately!

He restored a piano at the lodge at Mount Rainier and made the newspaper at the time.

Piano technicians need their 15 minutes of fame whenever possible! As do we all!

Finally got a chance to listen to the recording. Now I know what Peter means by an "expansive" sound. Very nice!
