I have seen several methods of hanging new hammers. What is considered the most efficient and accurate method? A factory video I saw showed them lining up the tails on a flat surface and squaring the hammers to that.

I remember a video where a complete set of shanks were dipped all at once into a vat of glue, then inserted all at once into the set of hammers. It took a few seconds. Can't get more efficient than that!

My favorite is the Spurlock jig. Not as efficient as the method Bob mentioned, but it leaves a very nice result!

Andre Oorebeek hangs a set of hammers faster than the workers in the factory. 30 minutes is all it takes him for the actual hanging. He has done a few sets... wink

He is a real hammer man, specializing in hammers and high end concert prep. Keep your eyes open for his forthcoming book on hammer voicing.

What type of glue was he using? I find if the hammers are bored right, I can do 5 at once. Still I'm not doing 3 a minute. If the glue set is slow enough to still move easiy yet tacky enough to stay really close while you work ahead, it's possible. I'd like to see hime do it.

I find the most efficient method of hanging grand hammers is...

Let Wally Brooks do it! wink

That has the advantage that if something goes wrong with a set of hammers, he is responsible for hanging the new ones as well as just replacing them.

I hang all of my sets in house. I use the Sperlock jigs for hanging, tapering, and tailing. I bore using the Renner jig. I also use the Renner gang clamp for pre voicing and filing.

It's nice to have the ability to custom install when needed.

I do it in-house also using my own version of a Spurlock-type jig. 'Looked at one, didn't like the price, so made my own.

By-the-way Ryan, what does it cost to have Wally Brooks come to your shop? Maybe I could get him up here in exchange for a nice Maine lobster dinner.
