I wanna thank all of you who have previously given advice on headphones.

I never used them for practice (either on my Clavinova or my digital classic organ) until about 2 months ago, it was very late at night and I wanted to try some new work on my DP. I plugged in a cheap pair of Sony neckphones and I couldn't believe the difference. The next day I played the same music with headphones and then w/o and it was a startling difference.
Very seldom do I now practice w/o them.

The next advice that I wanna thank is about the recommendation for Sennheiser. Because I wear glasses, the neckphones were hurting my ears. I bought a pair of HD 205s, and it sounds like I bought new instruments. Across the whole piano range I couldn't believe how clear and distinct the notes sounded. One area that is a real noticeable improvement was in in the deep bass (anything below 30hz). On the digital organ, I have internal speakers and a simulated pipe facade with four large speakers (it was a manuf option). I have been disappointed when I play the low pedals with low pitch stops the bass would be just a loud deep sound. With the Senns, the low pedal stops actually give a rumble (what the stops supposed to do), you can feel the vibrations in your body down to your feet!

Thanks all for the advice.

(Now if I can get all this Midi & virtual software figured out, I won't have to buy new instruments)

Glad it's worked out for you, Jerry! I have Sennheisers, too, and love them. I don't have a digital piano but will use them when working with my Zoom and audacity, and even when listening to my iPod, because they're more comfortable than any earbud style I have ever tried.

I'm in a similar situation as you so I'll post the current logic I'm using when deciding between a used/new.

Electronic stuff breaks and the older it is the harder it is to find replacement parts. 7 years is a long time with electronics. Is there any other 7 year old electronic gizmo in your house that is worth even $20?

Imagine you spend $700 and the piano breaks. You'll will probably not be able to recover even $10 of your money.

You can buy a new Casio or Yamaha (YPG series) for that amount of money. It may not have the action of the $2K+ models, but a new Piano is a new Piano. You'll be able to get 8 years out of it.

They aren't "meant" for digital piano, but in any case you can use a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter to use most any headphone with an ipod.

I do exactly as bitWrangler describes. I use the adaptor to plug into my laptop when I'm editing files in Audacity as well. If you get a good adaptor there's no perceptible loss of sound quality.

Yikes... I don't know the name/brand of mine; it was included when I bought the headphones. But I would go to some high-end stereo store that caters to audiophiles and get one that is gold-plated. You can get cheapie ones at places like Radio Shack but they're more susceptible to corrosion and sound quality issues.

I assume that your headphones have a "large" 1/4" plug?

Most small equipment take a 1/8" (aka 3.5 mm) plug.
But some take the smaller 2.5 mm plug.
Make sure you know the right size.
