My damper spoons dont seem to be long enough, a few of them are getting stuck under the damper not letting the hammer fall back to rest. Should I replace the dammer spoons?

Would you tell us a little about the piano. How old, approximately. What Make. How long have you been in the repair business?

I'm trying to picture a "dammer" spoon, and not having much luck. grin (Damper, right?)

Something is seriously amiss if the damper spoons are not engaging the dampers. Look for the cause of the miss-alignment before you think about replacing something as fundamental as the spoons.

There have been actions where "Dammer Spoons" is appropriate nomenclature!

That's a really wierd problem!! Are you sure they are not just getting stuck in a hole that has worn into the felt on the damper lever. This is something we find occasionally.

Quite simple, the spoons are a very soft metal, and are easily bent to the right position, also the will need burnishing, once in the right position. Dont try this though, as once they have been bent the regulation will be all over the place, the dampers will be lifting too early or too late, or not lifting at ALL! If you want to give it a go, I think you are very brave, just be prepared for bill to regulate of £150 upwards.

OK, that one got me laughing.

There's a world of truth hidden in the humor though. Damper spoon length is set in the design of the action. There should never be any reason to change that.

All jokes aside, I've seen a few pianos with short damper spoons that did exactly as the OP describes. I was able to straighten out the bend in the spoon which raised the spoons enough so they would stop jamming up the lever, but they were still very short. Brand withheld to protect the guilty.
