The private message icon keeps blinking, even when I read all the new messages. Is this normal? Am I supposed to do anything to stop it? Or is there a bug?

It's probably because you read the message, but did not reply.
I avoided the continuing light by placing my cursor in the reply box and clicking. I had no need to reply, but it was the only thing that kept it from blinking.
I think that works - Give it a try!
