Recently I tuned a 1918 Cable upright. The pitch raise and tuning went well, but as sometimes may happen, I dropped a mute onto the keys, behind the fallboard. Of course this is inaccessible by hand or most anything else for that matter. I tried to remove the fallboard but could not. I took out every screw under the keybed to no avail. I removed the keyslip and even with all the screws out, I could not budge the keyblocks or fallboard. Does anyone know how to remove the fallboard of this piano so I can retrieve my wedge? Fortunately the mute seems to be in such a position that it is not jumping around when the piano is played.

There might be a horizontal screw holding the blocks in place. You can't see it because the key set is in the way. Or one of the leg screws is holding the key blocks in place, by doing two jobs. Had that one before... You can't get to it by removing the music desk from above the fall board?

It would help if you could post a picture, but on a 1918, I dont think you will find the screws under the piano. On each side of the piano above the fallboard should be two pieces of wood upon which the front board is attached. Two screws usually hold these to each side of the piano. Remove these "arms" from each side and you will see a screw on each side of the board the lies on top of the fall board. Remove these screws and remove this board. Now you will see the screws that hold the fallboad in place.

Hope this helps!!

Ron hit it on the head. That's how it's put together.

Thanks, guys. I'll know what to look for the next time I go back, or if she calls and says the mute is bouncing around. Dan, I didn't see any way to remove the music desk, and I couldn't reach behind it by hand. Maybe I need one of those mechanics grabber things.

Yes, you do. The 8" rigid shaft screw holder in the Schaff catalog is standard equipment for techs.
