Hi,
Can anyone help with some backround info on a Hupfeld Upright.
Its a present for my wifes 30th and she will be learning to play on it.
I know "Hupfeld Upright" could be any number of pianos, but is the make sound or are there assosiated problems with this make?
I will take a tec to check it out with me but any useful hints on these pianos would be very helpful.
Its a basic model in a polished mahogony finish and in immaculate condition. The owner is an older gentleman who has upgraded to an expensive digital and has had it two years. He bought it second hand from someone who also owned it for a couple of years. He is asking 1250 but I'm sure will take 1000.
Any thoughts
Thanks Jon

Hey Jon(s), I assume it´s a piano made in Eastern Germany (German "Democratic" Republic) because you wrote basic model in a mahagony polished finish. If so, don´t buy it. Open the lid and look for any hints like a lable "VEB...." or made in DDR or GDR. These beasts had an action called Pianic, but it should be named Panic!
After the German Reunification Hupfeld was made by Rönisch and these pianos are quite good. I have one in my store, the model Hupfeld K122 wich is identical in construction to the Rönisch K123, really a fantastic instrument. The brand name Hupfeld was given up some years ago by Rönisch.
BTW, what do you mean by basic model: does it have no "columns" left and right under the keyboard? And what´s the English name for these ornamental elements? In German they are called Konsole.
Gregor

I guess it could be 10 years old, or 100 years old. With such a variation in possibilities, it is impossible to advise you.

Its only about 5 years old.
Looks similar to the photo but slightly newer and more modern.
Will check out those marking under the lid
Thanks

Open the lid and remove the upper front cover and take a look on the action. If it reads Pianic it´s made in DDR. Or look for a serial number. If the number is smaller than 200.000 then it´s made before 1990. But don´t mix up the number of the action with the number of the piano. These actions had a number printed on the hammers in the high treble, that´s the action number. And don´t believe the seller about the age of the piano. Not that he is lying but likely he just does not know. Once I wanted to buy an used Seiler upright. The seller told me on the phone that it´s 20 years old. It turned out that is was 120 years Gregor
