My (not so great) edition of the WTC ends Book 2's A minor fugue with a C# instead of C.

I'm not that familiar with the WTC, but have heard enough of them to remember that several of the minor key preludes and fugues do end with "major" chords, but I've never heard a performance of this one to end as such.

Anyone with more knowledge than I care to offer a suggestion whether this is a tolerable difference? Should I throw this edition away?

Daniel

The A minor fugue in WTC2 ends on an A minor chord. That C# cannot be right.

What edition do you have?

I prefer the Henle Urtext because of its clear printing, durable binding and heavy pages. I'm not knowledgable enough to tell you how accurate it is but this publisher has a good reputation. It's a little more expensive than some versions but it will last a long time.

Mine ends in a c major chord...oops, A minor.

I have Henle for other Bach works, but I didn't think I could justify paying that much for the WTC at this time, and I hate printing music off the Internet. I'm VERY embarrassed to admit that I got Schirmer's collection edited by Czerny (I know I know... frown ) for practically nothing off of Ebay. I said to myself "how bad can it possibly be?" I was hoping it would be a used piece of junk that was falling apart but at least with decent content that could hold me over until I graduate and start making money again. Instead, it's BRAND NEW without the slightest bend on any edges, but junk content-wise.

Should've saved that $$ for a nice 3-ring binder for when I end up printing them from IMSLP.

The Peters edition (ed. Franz Kroll) also ends with an A minor chord.

My Henle (ed. Otto von Irmer) has C#, and my other edition (ABRSM ed. Tovey) has C. In Tovey's notes he says:

In the last bar the British Museum autograph ends with (the major chord); but there is no doubt that the pupils' copies (which are unanimous here) represent Bach's own decision of what best suits the last chord of this stormy piece.
