Cheaper Sennheiser models aren't actually that good at all. The ones within $50 range are not really worth it. But the high end models are amazing. I have 2 pairs, cheaper HD280Pro and more expensive HD595. There is a huge difference between them, HD 280's are only ok but the HD595's are to die for. I personally think HD595 model and higher models are some of the best headphones you can buy.

Best thing for you is to go to a music store and test the headphones out. There is a lot of very crappy headphones out there made by the reputable brands. Testing various models is the key.

The HD280 is the PRO model with the closed isolated design and a neutral and true sound for use in the studio and for live sound.
The HD595 is a consumer model with articulated bass and an open design with low isolation for use at home with your HiFi stereo.

I also have the Beyerdynamic DT250. Comfortable and with, in my opinion, a great sound! Little on the expensive side though.

Peace.

To get the base response I think you need an enclosed design. I have Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO but they are outside your budget.

Hi Acquiescence, those are very good. It was a good buy. You can always try other models in stores, sell yours, buy used, etc. www.head-fi.org is the place to find all the info you'll ever want and then some.

I didn't see this thread until you'd already bought them, but those are exactly what I was going to recommend. I have used a great many headphones going all the way back to my days as a recording engineer, and this Sony model is my favorite. Good choice!

In general, noise reducing phones cost more than regular phones.

With Bose, make that a lot more! (Bose is all hype and marketing glitz.)

In general, you get more from your money if you:
(a) buy regular phones (unless you really need the noise cancelling)
and
(b) buy a quality brand of phones, rather than Bose.

You can find many good choices at headphone.com

Oblacone brings up a good point. There are open phones, closed phones, and semi-open phones. I prefer open (more comfortable, better sound), but you have choose for yourself.

Also, decide whether you want cirumaural cups that go around the ear, or supraural cups that go on the ear.

It's not hard to find a preference once you try them out. But it's hard to try ... most stores don't let you try. Sux!

One solution ... some online vendors will accept returns, and some even pay the return shipping (Amazon and B&H Photo).

I own both. The Sony MDR-7506 definitely is a better-sounding headphone than the Bose. The Bose sound good, and are particularly great if you want noise cancellation - I love 'em for airplanes and other noisy environments. But for pure listening, this model Sony is superior.
