I remember a piece by Hans Werner Henze being performed on TV which included a part for ocarina. My father, in the best traditions of Mrs. Malaprop, commented on the fact that the scoring included a part for an octoroon!
(Do you think that Sheridan would have been appalled, Sotto Voce?)

Well, I suspect this recording is somewhat silly but hard to say not having heard it. But there really is some interesting ocarina music, in particular that done by Nancy Rumbel and along with Eric Tingstad For example in American Acoustic: http://www.amazon.com/American-Acoustic-Tingstad-Nancy-Rumbel/dp/B000006NPWEnjoy

Rich This seems ridiculous to me. With sets of etudes by Hiller, Jensen, Holbrooke even Bertini un-recorded why is Naxos bothering to record this? This isn't an April Fools joke by any chance, is it?

(Do you think that Sheridan would have been appalled, Sotto Voce?) Hi Wood-demon, Sheridan would be appalled that these crazy reviews gave the Hanon disc a "9" for artistic quality but the ocarina compilation only a "1"! (Sheridan would also know with how fond the denizens of Lichtenburg are of dancing to the music of the ocarina—even Wilhelmina!—because though he's majoring in needlework at university, his minor is musical comedy.) Hey, is octoroon a musical instrument? I thought it was a macaroon cut into eight pieces. Steven

Hey, is octoroon a musical instrument? I thought it was a macaroon cut into eight pieces. Steven Actually it's when a Delius piece is encored (there's a cryptic clue for you!) Perhaps I should have followed the links in the OP and I might have "twigged" earlier that the ocarina disc was a joke (there actually was a composer called Oliphant Chuckerbutty). I think I might have been taken in by the Grimaud disc on the face of it, though (without reading the spoof review, that is!). I get the lame Wolf-Ferrari jokes, etc. but I'm still puzzled about the Mozart. Enlighten me, please!

So was this indeed a ruse? If not, I think I'll get the Hanon recording. Daniel

...there actually was a composer called Oliphant Chuckerbutty... Ah yes, good ol' Oliphant. (1884-1960) He was a cinema organist, church organist and composer, primarily worked in London. (This much is on Wikipedia, though I originally got the info from a church music forum.) One of his organ works, Paen has been recorded, and if you're willing to sleuth around, the score is available. (Actually, it's rather a fun piece...)
