I lack the ability to put my more complex musical ideas into practice, so I'm stuck making (very) simple pieces with strict formats...

Not too trivial, I hope?

First things first: is your screen name a reference to Homestarrunner? Why oh why aren't they making new episodes???? frown ha

I like this piece! It has a lot of energy and I like where it goes in development. 2 thoughts:

1. Any chance you'd want to try maybe altering your initial "riff" to not have so many repeating scales? I'm thinking mostly of the beginning, I can't recall if it's two or four scales per position/key, but at times it feels like too many (after repeating that theme in different places)...what I mean is, maybe something like, for every set of 2, play the first set as an ascending/descending scale like you are doing it, but the second one differently, maybe as a pattern of 1-5-2-5-3-5-1-5 (fingers of RH), or any other pattern that falls within the 5 notes. ?? Just an idea.

2. Just in my opinion, the endng wasn't quite "enough" to mesh with the energy and drive of the rest of the piece. I could picture it with some driving scale going downward, or some sort of dramatic pause worked in there after building the tension that last bit...I dunno, it just seemed to kinda peter out, which I found unsatisfying after all that came before.

Good work! I really do like this.

First things first: meh!

1. Yes, it gets very repetitive. This is what I did: there are 3 ascending-descending scales in a phrase; I changed the second and third one to D-E-F-G-A-E-F-C#. Not much of a change, but it's progress.

2. As for the ending, I wish to keep it in two voices, to be consistent with the whole piece. (That means no big cadences.) But you make a good point... so hard to decide.

Thanks!
