You have to measure the knuckle postion on Steinways too. They vary and Ds get rebuilt a lot. You shouldn't care what it used to be, just that what you replace it with is right.

Steinway makes a lot of mistakes. The D I am working on now is the second this year. Both were 1970s, teflon. Plate casting is horrid, almost a 3mm jump in the string plane from the tenor to the treble sections.

They missed the position of the end grain dowels in the keybed and the glide bolts had worn a divot in the bed.

I sure like the Wurzen felt balance rail punchings for leveling keys.

Yes. The knuckle position is moved back slightly. Steinway recommends using the modern shanks on all old Steinways, except if the jacks do not have adjusting buttons, which would be before 1900, and you are not replacing the wippens.

I compared the parts I have. the only difference was in the position of the drop screw. Since the set of hammers look so nice I am thinking I will change the flanges...repinning is some work but better than tossing a new set of pre-hung hammers!?

Hey,msks,I'm curious how that worked out with just changing the Hamburg flanges.I'm the one with the 1975 Steinway B with those Renner pre 1984 parts which someone had gutted the teflon previous. I have since changed out with new and different modern action parts. Were the wipps you had,the matching Steinway Renner made wipps (Hamburg body/noncentered wippen flange/lowered 2mm rep lever. Still have these near new parts myself and wondering whether they are dumpster material.I could change the wipp flange on these wipps if it would make them usable along with changing the Hamburg flanges on the prehung shanks or ?. The dimensions still don't seem to jive.
