I'm going to get started on my Bach piece pretty soon (all this talk about music auditions...). I've heard recordings of all 48 Preludes/Fugues from both WTC books, but only one time through all of them. I'm not asking for a recommendation (though they are welcome  ), just which Prelude and Fugue is your favorite (or favorites)?

i always like c minor one (WTC1) and i learned both prelude and fugue. also, prelude/fugue 24 (WTC2 b minor?), and i'm learning the prelude now and my teacher has the live recording of P&F 24 on web, which is fantastic.

Actually I ONLY like the one in C-minor from WTC1. Couldn´t really say why, perhaps it´s a combination of the harmonic-progression and my recent personal preference for pieces in C-minor. (Chopin op.10.12 and op.25.12 leap to mind)

They're all wonderful and very individual creatures with their specific traits. But if I should select a single one: E major from Book 2. Edit: It's so interesting to compare Glenn Gould's two recordings of the fugue. The version on his WTC2 CD clocks in at 1:48 and I strongly dislike almost everything in it. It almost sounds like a Midi. In contrast, there is a video of him playing the same fugue in a drastically different, truly sublime (IMO) interpretation that takes 5 minutes.

J. S. Bach - Prelude and Fugue n.2 in C Minor BWV 847
Love it, love it... on the piano though not so much on the harpsicord. Piano really brings it to life.
I would call it Prophecy for Piano.
The fugue is very catchy. Like a dance for the fingers.
I see people in an orchard very busy about their work and then the harvest celebration in the fugue. Is that strange or what.
But always the same movie in my head.

I find this interesting because besides a few votes for the C minor from Book 1, there seems to be no universal favorites like you'd expect going by common answers for say, Mozart's or Beethoven's piano sonatas. Or is it that people press play, and rarely make it past the C# major?  Daniel

It took me a long time to like it, but now I think the WTC books are perhaps the most consistently wonderful of all piano sets. It's easier to say which ones I'm not wild about:
Book 2 D major - I find the prelude a bit harmonically uninventive and the fuge too repetitive with that single repeated note in the subject
Book 2 g minor - dotted French overture rhythms annoy me in the prelude, and again I'm bothered by the monotonous repeated note in the subject
Book 2 A major - the fuge subject is just uninteresting to me, and leads to rather diatonic treatment to my ears.
Otherwise, I just love everything. The pieces run the gamut of possible emotions. Do yourself a favor and get at least one recording of both books. I'm partial to Gulda's interpretations (very virtuosic in the faster ones and inspired but still rhythmic in the slow ones), but there are many good versions out there.
For the past couple years I've especially had a thing for both e minors. They both have a very similar virtuosic, explosive, epic feel to me.

I'm working on the G major from Book 1.
Does anybody know of a good recording of the F major prelude from book 1?
Or has anyone accomplished the F Major and what advice can you share about the trills? I have heard some recordings where the trills do not continue throughout the duration of the notes.
