Hi all, first time poster. I just bought my HP 207 a couple weeks ago a I was wondering if those of you who also have a HP 207 would like to share some of the equalizer and sound setting tweaks that you have made. I gathered from these forums 2 different eq configurations, both of which I have tried and am rather pleased with; however, I am looking for more configurations to try! The eq settings I gleaned from these forums are:

1) A balanced, somewhat-mellow tone with good mid-range

HG: +5dB
HF: 8.0kHz
HMG:+1dB
HMF: 400Hz
HMQ: 0.5*
*(The original entry had 0,5 listed: I assumed this is what they meant!)
LMG: 0dB
LMF: 200Hz
LMQ: 2.0
LG: -4dB
LF: 100Hz

2) Good mid range with a brighter sound than previous

HG: +12dB
HF: 8.0kHz
HMG:+4dB
HMF: 2.5kHz
HMQ: 2.0
LMG: -4dB
LMF: 500Hz
LMQ: 2.0
LG: +6dB
LF: 125Hz

Also, if you guys try these and come up with a better tone description, please post!

On another note, the 3-D option. I can't get it to sound decent on my unit, and the low 3-D settings (+1,+2) just don't sound right. What sound or eq settings do you guys prefer to accompany this feature?

I have mixed feelings about the 3-D effect. It does have more spatial depth, but sounds a little phony to me. Definitely NOT to be used with the headphones. Anyway, I'll play around with it and see if I come up with anything better.

I just bought my HP-207 in this last week (thanks to those I privately questioned). I find the GP1 sound to be far superior with headphones vs. the built-in speakers (before attempting the above equalizations). I was expecting differences in low bass and high treble, but I even notice the significant difference in the middle of the keyboard (which I've read others complain about). I suspect the crossover network feeding the woofer and tweeter (L and R) is not of good quality (and I would expect the same of any DP in this price range). Since my main audio system is in the same room as the DP, I may end up sending the audio to it. Given the headphone sounds, I expect great sound thru my main speakers.

I kept my piano designer default settings except for hammer noise and stretch tuning. I set hammer noise to its minimum -2 (because 0 overwhelmed the top key tones with the built-in speakers). I set stretch tuning to off. I may be wrong here, but I thought I read that stretch is useful to compensate for uprights with shorter bass strings. If full size (classical) concert grands always use stretch, then I will reconsider.

I agree with eJohn, 3-D is too phony with built-in speakers.

I love my new piano; now I just need to learn to play and maybe to compose.

I found an old paper on inharmonicity of piano strings. The Steinway model D does need stretch tuning, but it's less than shorter pianos. I'll probably go back to preset stretch setting.

Anyone has other suggestions for improving the sound of the HP207?

I own one and love it, but personally the sound through the built-in speakers with the default settings is a great disappointment over the sound using the headphones.

I wish the difference was less obvious.

I haven't got my HP 207 delivered yet (can hardly wait!) but the difference between speakers and headphones is exactly why some people forego expensive stereo equipment for quality headphones... it costs a lot more money to get a good sounding speaker system than good sounding headphones. The difference is one of physics - it is much easier to drive a small headphone speaker than a large stereo speaker.

Piano tuners stretch the octaves because of a defect in our hearing. At the extreme high and low ends, perfect octave tuning sounds wrong. To sound "right", the lows need to be a bit lower and the highs a bit higher than the theoretically correct setting.
