Post the serial number here and one of us with a copy of the Pierce Piano Atlas can look up the year of manufacture for you.

Regards, [/b] A19576...now is that correct, because I think serial numbers are just numbers right? But that's all I could find, it was on the back like stamped into the wood. If it helps it's an artist console (probably 40") and should date to around the 1950s...but I honestly don't know what age it is.

That number can not be right. The last time they made a five digit Serial was in the 1890's In the 50's they are around 571300 Look inside for a longer number.

A19576 would be 1976.

[/b] According to Pierce : "Since 1976 Kimball serial numbers are preceded by a letter; letters stand for: R=Kimball Brand, J=Jasper American private label, C=Conn, T=Misc. Kimball brand. Production of Grands stopped early 1996 and Verticals in April 1996." There are also A, S, B, D, numbers, but Pierce does not indicate what they stand for. All of these letter-preceded serial numbers are five digit numbers and cover the period from 1976 to 1996. Regards,

It says 1914 on it, but it is an unusual vertical piano.
The Serial Number is 73573
My sister in law has one and needs to sell it.
I've seen some similar with the ornate detail, but not one with the same as this one.
Thanks for your help.

It was made about 1900. I am sorry, but the chances are that she will get very little for it. People are giving away more old uprights than there is demand for.

1915. Probably too old to have any value other than sentimental.

These posts are so helpful. I am hunting around for pianos in my rural area. I just looked at a Kimball Baby Grand at a church. They are selling it because they prefer their digital piano. It has been sitting collecting dust for a while. All the keys and pedals work, but the cabinet is showing wear. They are asking $1950. They don't know much about it, so I'm trying to find out more about it. 403881 is the only number I could find and it was just behind the music desk. Seems like the price might be a little high given its dusty and dinged-up condition. However, it is a working piano! Is it worth dragging a technician to see it? (About an hour drive.) Or should I just walk away. BTW, I am buying a piano basically for fun. I am not a serious musician, although I play. My daughter (7 year old) is about to start lessons. My house is very old, and although it is well-insulated, I don't want the burden of owning too nice a piano. My budget is $5,000. But in my part of the world, the pianos are either $20,000 grands of considerable size or sort of junkers! Any tips would be appreciated. I am amazed by this site and the wealth of knowledge. Thanks piano experts!

Kimball grand pianos are variable in quality, so for the most part, I would not recommend buying one without expert help. Most of them are not very good quality, however, so it may not be worth your while, particularly for a piano that has been in a public area like a church. That serial number dates from 1935, which makes it quite old, so I would not expect much from it.

A lady at work is selling her Kimball upright Piano that I was interested in getting for my wife so she can start playing again. It has the serial number 977868, could anyone please tell me what year this is and is $350 is a good price or not. We went and looked at it and it is in good condition aesthetically and all of the keys and pedals function well.
Thank you for your help!

It was made about 1976, and it is probably a decent piano, but how good a price it is depends on what model. In particular, it would be particularly good if it were 45" tall, not quite so good if it were about 3" shorter, and about average if it were shorter than that.

Thank you! I will get a measurement tonight on the height. I got depth and width dimensions but did not think about height.

Francophile, with your budget you are very close to affording a better-quality, new, in-warranty upright: for example, Charles Walter 1500, or Kawai K-3, etc.
If you're looking for Kimballs, I would only say, "Don't." I grew up with one and could not recommend the make as a musical instrument. The cabinet looked nice, though. Kimball sold a lot of not-so-good pianos, but they were actually a furniture-making company.
