In my son's Chinese school class, almost all kids take piano or violin lessons. In his elementary school class, 2 out of 3 Asia American take piano lessons, and only 1 out of the other 22 kids take piano lessons.

Two out of my 29 students are Asian American.
But I noticed the makeup of the piano festival we had in March, and there were a good number of both Asian and Indian children. And most of these won the top spots.

In my area, it seems the percentage of Asian (I include Indian families too) American students taking piano lessons is much higher. Just wondering is it the case for other area.

My studio is 60% Asian ancestry, 40% Euro ancestry; Of the Asian, it's roughly 3 - 1 Korean - Filipino. No Chinese students at the moment. Had recently both Japanese and Vietnamese.

As I'm inner-city I only teach 2 or 3 Caucasian students but to be honest I really don't notice. It always reminds me of Ella Fitzgerald. She was 8 or 9 before it was pointed out to her (in the playground) that she was black. I think it came as a bit of a shock to her.

This might depend on what languages the parents and the teacher speak. Plenty of first generation Asian immigrant parents would only send their kids to teachers of the same background who can speak their home language simply because it's much easier to communicate. Unfortunately, I have also witnessed a very small number of cases where race was an issue.
