So THAT'S why the 1950s Baldwin Hamiltons I've seen in the past year were almost spot on A-440, in spite of not having been tuned in the last several years! (One that I bought hadn't been tuned in 15 or 25 years (I can't remember now) and was about 15-20¢ flat.)

Not necessarily. I've seen pianos that my dad or I tuned last, 20 years ago here in Michigan that were dead on pitch yet. Explanation? I have none. Other than maybe the humidity was stable for much of that time.

I would do nothing to this if you plan to upgrade shortly. 5 years is not much time for this to deteriorate any further…………………..

fe2008:

Rather than ask how much it might cost, which is difficult to answer, you could ask how long it might take. Then you could estimate your cost by using the hourly rate for a tuner there in Brazil. (hint, hint, Jerry.)

And to take Dan's point a little further, conssider if the increased cost of repairs will be regained by a higher resale value in 5 years.

So where in Brazil are you? I was on a ship that often docked at Recife. It was one of my favorite ports...

The amount of time involved would depend greatly on how many of these bridge pins are split out and the severity of the splits. 1/2 day? Full day? 2 days? Don't know...

I can tell you that I would charge for 2 service calls to start out with. First, we have to get there. Next, we have to remove the action to inspect the tenor & treble sections bridge area. Then, remove the offending strings, remove the pins on the intended repair areas, epoxy it, or, whatever your preference of glue might be, clean everything up, let it dry, come back and re-install the strings and tune it. Thus, 2 service calls, time for repairing and tuning. My guesstimate would be no less than $600.00. Probably higher...here anyway... But, like I said, it is only a guesstimate.

I agree with Dan and others here as I also stated, in that, use it for 5 years as is.. The money you save now, can be applied to the purchase of an upgrade later..
