IMHO, if you are playing by rote, just playing what is shown, why they are there and what they accomplish is just something that would be nice to understand.

However, as chords make up the harmony (1/3 of the total picture)if you know why, what and how they perform -- this can not hurt.

Knowing chords and music theory really helps on memorizing classical pieces.

It's true; I was playing (sight reading, really) this Chopin piece; it was either a Polonaise Dance or a funeral march, and it was more or less, nothing but chords. I have a bit of a harder time sight reading chords with more than three notes in them, so that one was a real challenge.

In my opinion, it's critical. Although the notes on the page represent the sound, the real language of music is melody, harmony, counterpoint, and all the other concepts of music theory. I think it compares to acting: a skilled actor can learn to sound out lines in a language they don't really understand, but there is no substitute for really speaking the language and not just making the sounds.

As others have pointed out, it does help with the details of memorization. But I really think it goes beyond that; it gives you an insight into the meaning and context of the music that simple note-playing can't quite match.
