I've a 6'-3" Mehlin built in 1902. I'm trying to determine how much crown, if any, is left in the soundboard. I've run a tight thread across the bottom of the soundboard perpendicular to the grain. As far as I can tell, by that method, there is none. The thread is flat against the soundboard in the middle.

However, this spring, we opened the windows to take advantage of the fresh air. The following two weeks brought quite a bit of rain. I know this is a recipe for bringing the piano out of tune, but I didn't really care. I'm trying to find excuses to tune it anyway in order to improve my aural skills.

Sure enough, the middle of the keyboard went quite sharp - about 10 cents. The extreme bass and treble were hardly affected. This makes sense to me, assuming there actually is crown in the board. So I got out my trusty thread again and stretched it across the bottom. Nothing. Still no measurable crown. So, does this board have crown in it or not?

If it's of any help, I've measured the downbearing in degrees of the entire scale. Here it is.

Thank you,
