I have an Ivers and Pond, small grand (around 5') built in the 1920s, serial number 73152. It was rebuilt in the 1960s but now the pins are loose and it needs to be tuned down from pitch. How do I determine if this piano is worth rebuilding? I am rather attached to it, having played on it for 30 years, but do not want to invest money into a piano whose time has long passed...

Have you considered treating the block w/ca glue. Do a search of the topic and you'll see that many techs report excellant results.

I haven't tried it. Our piano tuner said it could be a temporary solution, kind of last ditch effort.

I'm quite partial to the old I&P grands myself as I grew up playing one that my grandparents owned.

That being said, you should consider that this particular piano is a very small grand and as such does not have a particularly high monetary value even in great condition. Aside from the failing pinblock what is the condition of the rest of the piano?

The way to determine whether it is worth rebuilding is to get an estimate for the work, and go to the piano store and see what you can buy for the same amount of money.

I recently did my first CA glue treatment on a piano with loose tuning pins. I was really hesitant to try it, until I actually tried it. The piano responded well and tunes beautifully now.

Yes, do some searching on this site for posts about CA glue, or using super glue for pin blocks. I don't recall reading anything about the treatment not working. I also don't recall reading anything about trouble with tuning years after the treatment.

I think I need an expert opinion on it's condition. My tuner says the sound board looks like it is in good condition. But the hammers are sticking and some of the notes are sounding dull, which might be from the hammers...
